Reactor Basics

RSTOIC and RYIELD RSTOIC: The most basic reactor types in aspen Useful for when extent of reaction is known Cannot be used for kinetics calculations RSTOIC: For use when stoichiometry and conversion is known RYIELD: For use when neither kinetics or stoichiometry are known

REQUIL vs. RGIBBS REQUIL RGIBBS Calculations made based on thermodynamic calculations REQUIL required inputs: Outlet stream & reaction REQUIL output: Keq at outlet stream conditions Extent of reaction can be used as an input as well RGIBBS Calculations based on minimizing Gibbs energy in the system RGIBBS required inputs: 1 or more inlet and outlet streams RGIBBS output: Phase and/or chemical equilibrium Can constrain equilibrium values or heat duty or temperature approach http://www.just.edu.jo/~yahussain/files/Reactors.pdf

RBATCH Maximum of one feed stream Inputs Must use a mixer before entering the reactor Inputs Specifications Kinetics Stop Criteria (Pictured Right) Operation Times

RCSTR Normal Reactor Feed Inputs CSTR Specifications CSTR Reactions Temperature, Pressure, Mole Flow Rate, Mole Fractions CSTR Specifications Reactor Volume, Temperature, Pressure CSTR Reactions Specify Reaction Kinetics, Reactants, and Products

RPLUG Only takes one feed stream, mixer required. Allows for cross stream of thermal fluid Dimension input Catalyst loading input, RCSTR is the only other reactor that offers

Our recommendation: RSTOIC! Ideal for use when yield and kinetics calculations have been done by hand or using software other than Aspen Plus Most students already have experience using these in CHBE444
