The Cell Cycle
What is the cell cycle? The stages are cell goes through to divide into 2 identical cells.
Two Parts of the Cell Cycle Interphase – “resting” phase Cell carries out “normal” day to day activities Mitosis – Division of the nucleus
Who is involved? Parent Cell – The starting cell Daughter Cell – The resulting cells (usually 2)
Interphase is made up of three stages: G1 – Gap 1 – Makes more organelles and cytoplasm S phase – Synthesis – More DNA is made; DNA is replicated G2 – Gap 2 – Cell checks for errors and gets bigger.
Form of DNA during Interphase Chromatin – Long and stringy
Mitosis Notes
What is Mitosis? Division of the nucleus
Form of DNA during Mitosis DNA is in the form of chromosomes
Stages of Mitosis in Order Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
Prophase - Preparing Chromatin Chromosome Nuclear membrane disappears Mitotic Spindle forms
Metaphase - Middle Chromosomes line up in the middle
Anaphase – Apart Chromosomes get pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase - Two Two new nuclei form Chromosome Chromatin Cleavage furrow forms
Followed by … Cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm
What is produced? 2 cells that are identical to each other
