The Evolution of the Mobile Phone

What is Natural Selection? Organisms w/favorable genetic variations for a certain environment will survive, reproduce, & pass these variations to offspring

Adaptations

Peppered Moth: an example of natural selection

Before Industrial Revolution After Industrial Revolution

Before the Industrial Revolution, what color had the advantage Before the Industrial Revolution, what color had the advantage? Which color would have a greater population? After the Industrial Revolution, what color had the advantage? Which color would have a greater population?

Adaptation Any trait that aids the chances of survival & reproduction of an organism An individual can NOT adapt to environment!! A species can adapt over time to environment 3 types

Adaptations Adaptations through variations in a species allow some of a species to survive if the environment changes.

Types of Adaptations Structural Adaptations Physiological Adaptations Behavioral Adaptations

1. Structural Adaptations Changes in the structure of organism’s body parts Ex: thorns, spines, disruptive coloration (zebra/killer whale), camouflage, mimicry

Ex. Camouflage A species blends in with environment Ex. Walking stick, leaf katydid Camouflage Video

Coral king Ex. Mimicry One species “copies” another species – visual, smell, sound Ex: King snake, owl butterfly, Viceroy butterfly Viceroy monarch

2.Physiological Adaptations Changes in organism’s metabolic processes (Function of body parts) Ex: drug resistance - bacteria, pesticide resistance - insects, poison glands

3. Behavioral Adaptations Changes in organism’s response to environment Ex: spinning webs, danger signals, mating rituals, hibernation Can be learned behaviors (taught) or instinctual (inherited)

Name the 3 types of adaptations and give an example of each Talk to a Partner Name the 3 types of adaptations and give an example of each

Try These!!

Classify the following adaptations: Thick fur on a polar bear Structural Adaptation A skunk’s spray Physiological Adaptation Non toxic butterflies look like their more poisonous cousins Structural Adaptation (mimicry)

Classify the following adaptations: Bats have adapted their hearing to hunt at night via sonic response Behavioral Adaptation Frogs have adapted to freezing temperatures by evolving a glycol like substance in their bloodstreams - like antifreeze Physiological Adaptation

Classify the following adaptations: Students have learned to Google answers vs. doing their own homework Definitely a Behavioral Adaptation

Chocolate Bug Lab!!!

Be sure to use the term “natural selection” Quick Write Before the Industrial Revolution, what color had the advantage? Which color would have a greater population? After the Industrial Revolution, what color had the advantage? Which color would have a greater population? Be sure to use the term “natural selection”
