Presentation by Megan Jones

April 22nd, 1970 – First Earth Day Who are they? Inspired by Rachel Carson's New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. Ms. Carson raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and public health. Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin and organized by Denis Hayes in 1970.  Earth Day Network manages and organizes Earth Day and related environmental education and policy activities. The Earth Day network (EDN) works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world

What do they do? Environmental laws like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act soon followed the creation of EDN. EDN promotes year-round environmental citizenship and action, worldwide. EDN works to broaden the definition of "environment" to include all issues that affect our health, our communities and our environment, such as greening deteriorated schools, creating green jobs and investment, and promoting activism to stop air and water pollution. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=earth+day+network+images&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=iLpXU9ufOcXZkAXWhIHgCA&ved=0CFQQ7Ak&biw=1366&bih=667#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=ss-xQyGAQVZiWM%253A%3BdZVLc1qgDflovM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ftheobamacrat.files.wordpress.com%252F2013%252F04%252Fearth_day_every_day.jpg%253Fw%253D468%2526h%253D234%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ftheobamacrat.com%252Ftag%252Fearth-day-images%252F%3B468%3B234 (Image of world, n.d.)
