S.I. The International System of Units Why Earth and why hands?

What is S.I.? An international language of numbers. All scientist and mathematicians from around the world use this method of recording data so that it is GLOBALY understood. An easy way to measure that requires no conversions Also known as the metric system

Who uses this? Rest of the world Uses the S.I. system to measure length, liquids, and mass Internationally understands the S.I. system U.S.A. & Great Brittan Use the British system of measurements Not Internationally accepted

Why them and not us? Because we used to be governed by the British (remember the pilgrims) we adapted many of their customs. When we formed our own country we kept many of their traditions including their way of measuring. The British system of measuring has been used in this country for hundreds and hundreds of years. Where as the rest of the world moved on and found a more cohesive and globally accepted way of measuring. The United States and England did not.

What does it measure? S.I. Unit What it measures American Equivalent Some pictures to help us remember Meter Length or distance Yard, mile, feet, centimeters millimeters --------- Liter Volume of liquids and gases Gallon, ½ gallon, pint, cup, teaspoon, tablespoon ---------- Grams Mass Pound and ounces -----------

Do you notice any similarities? Meters Measures the size of an object or the distance between to points. For example: My height is 5 feet or 1.52 meters The length of a football field is 300 yards or 100 meters. Do you notice any similarities?

Liters Measures how much liquid an object can hold. For Example: In the United States there are many different ways of measuring liquid; cups, gallons, mints, ounces, etc. The rest of the world only uses Liters.

Grams Used to measure the weight of an object or how much mass that object takes up. For example: Let’s pretend that I weighed 100 pounds in the S.I. system I would weigh 45 Kilo grams Instead of measuring ounces of sugar and then cups of sugar you can just measure grams of sugar. It’s so easy, there are only three basic units all you have to remember is Meters, Liters, and Grams!
