A home can be divided into three areas: A home is divided into three areas. Can anyone guess by viewing the graphics what the three zones are? Social, service and private.

Three Zones Private Social Service Bedroom and bathroom Living room, family room, den, entrance hall, recreation room, dining room, patios and decks The private area of the home consists of the bedrooms and bathrooms. The social zone is where a family member would entertain guests such as the living room, dining room or deck. The service zone is made up of the kitchen, laundry room, garage and workshop. Circulation Halls are sometimes used to circulate traffic from one room to another. Use of halls should be minimized when possible because they are considered a poor use of space.

Social Zone Accessed from the main entry Foyer may serve as an area for greeting Living room used to entertain guests Family room is a multipurpose area Dining room is used for serving meals Important notes about the social zone. It should be accessed from the main entrance. Often a foyer is used to greet guests. A living room or family room is often used for entertaining. Dining rooms are used mainly for serving meals.

Service Zone Accessed from the service entry Bathrooms, both private and guest Kitchen, the work hub Utility room (mud room) Garage The service zone should be placed so that guests will not have to see them unless invited to.

Private Zone Master Bedroom Guest bedroom, should be accessed from a hallway to provide privacy from the social zone Closets The private zone includes the bedrooms, master and guest.

Open vs closed plans As discussed in Unit 1, floor plans can be considered open or closed based on the amount and location of walls.

Bubble Diagram breakfast laundry Family room Master Kitchen Garage Den Foyer ½ bath It is easier to arrange the spaces in the home if you have an understanding of the different zones and how they relate to each other. A bubble diagram is a way to sketch spaces and show their relationship to the site. Using bubbles helps to foster creativity. Dining Porch
