Standards of Measurement Newspaper clipping - can you find the measurements in it?

Historically, body parts were used as measuring devices   The height of a horse was measured in hands Foot comes from the average length of a person's foot. A pace is the length of  a person's step. *What is the main problem with this kind of system?

Match the unit with the item... A  _______________ of milk. A  __________ of material. A  __________ of potatoes. A  __________ of rope. You are driving  60 _______ per hour.  a.  pound b.  miles c.  foot d.  yard e.  gallon The units above use an ENGLISH system of measurement - used mainly in England and U.S.A. Most other countries use the METRIC system

You are probably also familiar with some of the metric system units You are probably also familiar with some of the metric system units.  Match these... A  2 ______ bottle of soda. A  ________ of sugar. A  ________ stick. a.  gram b.  liter c.  meter

Science uses the International System of Units (SI) known as the Metric System. (Get use to it! Do not say pound, inches, feet, yards, or miles in this class!) Quantity Unit Symbol Length Meter m Mass Kilogram kg Temperature Celsius C Volume (s) Cubic meter m³ Volume (l) Liter L Time Seconds s

Be warned. You will be doing math in this class. If a doctor orders 10 cc's of insulin, how many mls is that?

Metric system units are base 10, so it is easy to convert Ex.   There are 10 millimeters in 1 centimeter          100 centimeters in 1 meter A mm is about as thick as a dime.   Notice there are about 10 dimes between the 6 and the 7 on this photo. The large number represent centimeters.

Don't worry about converting inches to centimeters - just measure in centimeters to start with. Use your ruler to calculate. 1. Width of your desk  _______ cm 2. Width of your desk  ______ mm   3. Length of your index finger _____ cm 4. Length of your index finger ______mm

Length Measurements Millimeter = small objects, like a quarter Centimeter = small objects, your foot or even your height Meter = larger distances, the size of a room Kilometer = much larger distances, St. Louis to Springfield What are the english units for the lengths above?

Volume measures the amount of something, usually a liquid. SI units for volume Liter Milliliter   Beakers and Graduated cylinders used to measure

CC = cubic centimeter, which is the same as a ml Used in medicine

Mass: the amount of matter in an object (It’s not weight Mass: the amount of matter in an object (It’s not weight!! Don’t even think that they are the same!! They AREN’T!) Weight measures mass + gravity       Mass is measured in grams and kilograms.

Units of Mass Grams for small objects or foods Kilograms for larger objects like people          1000 grams = 1 kilogram Some scales show both pounds and kilograms.  How much does this person weigh?   1lb = .45 kilograms (well on Earth)

Tools of Measurement What do I use to measure the _________? Length metric ruler Mass triple beam balance Volume(s) (regular object ) l x w x h Volume (s) (irregular object) measure the displacement of water Volume- (l) graduated cylinder Temperature thermometer

Dimensional Analysis- Process of converting units More than 1: da= deka - 10 h= hector - 100 K= Kilo – 1000 Less than 1: m= milli - 1/1000 -As a decimal: ________ c= centi - 1/100 -As a decimal: ________ d= deci – 1/10 -As a decimal: ________

Conversion Factors 1m = 100cm 1m = 1000mm 1000 m = 1 km 1 cm³ = 1cc = 1 ml

Problems 2500 grams to kilograms

How many kilograms are equal to 1357 grams?

How many liters are equal to 3.184 ml?

How many ml are equal to 5.43cm³

Quiz Time

1. What is the metric unit you would use to measure your foot          A football field? ____________          The distance between St. Louis and Chicago? _____ 2.  ____________is the amount of matter in an object 3.  ____________ is the amount of space an object takes up. 4.  If you were to weigh yourself using the metric system, what unit would you use? __________ 5.  What does SI stand for?  ______________________ 6.   Name an equipment that would be used to measure volume? ___________________ 7.   How many millimeters are in a centimeter? ______ 8.   How many grams are in a kilogram? ______
