The Periodic Table of Elements
Ti 22 4+ 3+ Titanium 47.9 atomic number ion charges(s) symbol 22 4+ 3+ Ti Titanium 47.9 ion charges(s) symbol Each element has its own box in the periodic table! name atomic mass
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus! The atomic number increases one by one through the periodic table.
Atomic Mass This is the mass of an average atom of an element It is always written as a decimal number It is measured in atomic mass units (amu)
Ion Charge This is the electric charge that an atom has It can be positive or negative, depending on how many electrons it has. An element with a 2+ is missing two electrons An element with a 2- has an extra two electrons. Some elements have one charge, some have more a multiple ion charge
Periods The HORIZONTAL rows are the periods. They are numbered 1-7
Families or Groups Elements are arranged VERTICALLY in families Families have similar physical and chemical properties
1 2 17 18
Groups 1-Alkali Metals 2-Alkaline Earth Metals 17-Halogens 18-Noble Gases
Metals, Non-Metals, and Metalloids What characteristics do these have? Metal Nonmetal Metalloid
Lets make a periodic table! You will be given 2-3 cue cards with a chemical symbol on them. Fill in all missing information Blue cards are metals, yellow are metalloids, and pink are non-metals! Create a large periodic table on the whiteboard!

Find someone who has an element that is the same charge as yours.
Find someone who has an element that has a different charge than you
Find someone who has an element with an atomic mass less than yours
Find someone who has an element with an atomic mass greater than yours
Find someone who has an element that becomes before you in the alphabet.
Find someone who requires a higher melting point than you.
Find someone who has a boiling point that is at least 1000 degrees away from your boiling point
Find someone who has a melting point that is less than yours.
