Presentation transcript:

Heat Transfer

Processes of Heat Transfer There are three processes of heat transfer: Radiation – Doesn’t need particles – wave energy Conduction – Movement of heat in solids and liquids by movement of particles. Convection – Movement of heat in solids, liquids and gasses by movement of particles.

Common Examples Radiation – heat from a fire; sunlight Convection – boiling water; air currents Conduction – frying pan; pots

Ways to Heat our Homes

Firewood Oil Electricity Hot water Radiation Geothermal Heat Pumps Solar

Types of Insulating Technologies

Animal fur Refrigerator Thermos Fiberglass insulation Sod newspaper

Insulators vs. Conductors Insulators are materials that slow down heat loss. Eg. Your winter coat Conductors allow heat to move easily. Eg. A Frying pan.

Specific Heat Capacity The amount of heat energy that a substance can hold is called specific heat capacity. Substances with large heat capacities will take longer to warm up and cool down. The unit is J/g oC.

Specific Heat Capacities Substance Heat Capacity (J/g0C) Water 4.18 Alcohol 2.43 Dry Soil 0.80 Steel 0.42 Wood 1.71 Which of the materials above looses heat fastest? Which one looses heat slowest?

Careers in Heat There are many jobs that a person might have that involve heat and temperature. Furnace repair person Light bulb manufacturer Blacksmith Volcanologist Glass blower

Business Card Using a computer, create a business card for a person with a career associated with heat and temperature. Include responsibilities required for the job.
