What is Cloning?

Give one example of cloning (G) * ** *** Give one example of cloning (G) State one advantage and one disadvantage of cloning an organism Describe what is meant by a clone (D)

What is a clone? Clones are genetically identical individuals. There are different ways of getting clones Twins Taking cuttings Tissue cultures Cloning

Cloning in plants

Cloning in animals

Oh Goldie, you’re my favourite sheep If only all my sheep were exactly like you I could use selective breeding, but It would take too long

I’m a big name in the world of cloning Why don’t you and Goldie come to my Lab and I’ll see what I can do for you I’m a big name in the world of cloning Hi Famer Boris Hi Goldie

Thank you so much for coming – do you have any questions before we start?

How does Cloning work? It won’t hurt my little Goldie will it?

Cloning is a simple process - let me tell you all about it

First we take a skin cell from Goldie

Then we remove the Nucleus from the cell Now we need another sheep This Nucleus contains Goldie's DNA Then we remove the Nucleus from the cell Now we need another sheep

We Take an Egg Cell out of the new sheep You are going to do WHAT?!?!?!?!

The we remove the nucleus from the new sheep cell This Nucleus contains Goldie's DNA The we remove the nucleus from the new sheep cell

We now have an egg cell containing Goldie’s Exact DNA – We need to find a place for it to grow

Once inside the Surrogate sheep the baby sheep develops as normal I wish the little so and so would stop kicking me

The Sheep goes back to live on a farm and has a normal pregnancy

She Give birth to a sheep who is Genetically identical to Goldie

What an excellent idea – I think I’ll keep going

THE END

Your Task You are going to make your own story board explaining the process of cloning. You will use this for a radio interview Try to include these key terms Nucleus DNA Genetic Material Chromosomes Identical
