Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Division Paul B. Shepson AGS Division Director

NSF and AGS Budgets On May 5, 2017 Omnibus spending bill was signed into law Flat funding (+0.1%) relative to FY16 for NSF Timing of the FY17 funding has resulted in a backlog of processing of new awards and funding increments On May 23, 2017 as part of the budget process the NSF’s FY2018 request was submitted to Congress Detailed information at https://www.nsf.gov/about/budget/fy2018 FY16 Enacted FY18 Request Change NSF $7,493M $6,652M -11.2% GEO $877M $783M -10.6% AGS $253M $228M -10.2%

Mortgages This fiscal year created many budgetary challenges. High mortgage rates in Geospace led to delays in new awards and payments in grant increments. To address this issue and to create flexibility for future years, fewer awards were made. These awards were made as standard awards – the total amount was amount was paid to the PIs up front. STR, MAG and, AER all implemented this in FY17. This is important to the health of the programs and the community in the out years.

Portfolio Review Formal process is now complete with AC Geo accepting GS response to PR and NRC review AGS Update page has details https://www.nsf.gov/geo/ags/updates/index.jsp

Robust and balanced portfolio Need to ensure continuing award levels are inline with NSF policy Creation of Integrated Geospace Science Program to address large system topics difficult to place in the current programs.

DKIST and AST Support DKIST is on schedule for first light in early 2020 We need to prepare now to utilize this amazing new instrument suite to transform solar physics research AST is fully behind supporting solar physics research In FY17 they held the first panels for the Solar and Planetary Research Grants (SPG) program resulting in about $1M in new awards.

Space Weather a National Priority "Ooh La La!" Space weather readiness is a compelling challenge for SHINErs! S141 – Space Weather Act passed the US Senate with unanimous support NSF is fully committed to space weather Participating in the SWORM process Supporting the cutting edge research Community input on benchmarks and research priorities will be through a series of RFIs posted to the federal register and workshops. Please provide your valuable input in this important process

Interagency Collaborations MOU with NASA under review Looking forward to: NSCI pilot with AST, PHY, CISE, and NASA Replaces Strategic Capability/ Space Weather modelling O2R pilot under development (NSF-NASA-NOAA) Topic – solar data assimilation for predictive modeling DRIVE centers down the road 26 July 17 AGS Update

Importance of Broader Impacts Broader impacts is one of the two evaluation criteria for proposals to NSF They are an essential part of your proposal If your BI are poor your proposal will be declined by myself as division director What makes good broader impacts Depends on where you are and what your doing, but be creative! National Alliance for Broader Impacts https://broaderimpacts.net/

Conclusions Solar physics research has compelling scientific challenges! The section is engaged in managing the recommendations of the Portfolio review process We continue to support exciting research through the core program, SHINE, and SPG
