Individualism and Collectivism Tennis Individualism and Collectivism

Buss’s Study: Cultural Differences Females from collectivist cultures placed a higher value on social status and ambition. Alternatively, females from individualistic cultures placed a lower value on these traits. Males from individualistic cultures placed less emphasis on domestic skills. Alternatively, males from collectivist cultures placed more value on these skills. There are two ways to view Buss’s results, as shown in the italics comments

Base your answer on Buss’s research. How (and why) might cultural values influence mate preferences? Answer Guidelines: What we’re looking for here is to get students thinking about how cultural values can influence how we think and the judgements we make. Therefore, our cultural values may influence what we’re looking for in a mate, so we may prefer different qualities depending on our cultural background. Fast Finisher Options: Write another explanation of the results Evaluate Buss’s research Read this lesson in the textbook Make sure your workbook is up to date – show work to me for feedback Add to study notes in your workbook

Homework Write a note of what you need to complete for homework tonight so you can keep up.

Topic 5.3: Culture and Attraction Chapter 5: Love and Marriage For Love or …? Chapter 5: Love and Marriage

Charades or Guess Who? Choose your review game Either option, write down a key term on a card Your key term should be one that is really important but others might not think to write.

Arranged Marriages What are your thoughts? The Case for Arranged Marriages (TED Talk Here)(6 mins) Fleeing from an Arranged Marriage (TED Talk Here)(5 mins)

Create Your Dream Mate! What qualities and characteristics would they have? Imagine you found someone just like this. Would you marry them if you weren’t in love with them?

Levine et al.’s (1995) Cross-Cultural Study 11 cultures (college students) Compared the importance of love in getting married “If a person had all the qualities you desired, would you marry them if you weren’t in love with them?” Yes, No, Neutral (were the choices) Indian, Pakistani and Thai participants were more likely to answer “yes” (collectivist cultures) American, British and Australian participants were more likely to answer “no”

Explanation: Harry Triandis Collectivist cultures place higher value on social norms and duty, as opposed to personal pleasure. Marrying for love is about personal pleasure. Social norms could be arranged marriages (e.g. Pakistan and India). Duty could be to their parents’ wishes for whom they marry.

Constructing an argument Write an essay plan that shows how you would answer the following essay question. Be sure to include your: central argument evidence Counter-argument (with evidence) To what extent do sociocultural factors influence the formation of personal relationships?

Base your answer on Levine’s and Triandis’s research. How might cultural values influence the formation of a marriage? Answer Guidelines: Critical Thinking Extension Can this study be evaluated based on population validity?

Three Levels of Learning: How are you doing? Knowledge Define key terms Comprehend and summarize studies Understanding Can explain relationships between variables (e.g. cultural values) and behaviour (e.g. mate selection) Can explain how studies demonstrate relationships Critical Thinking Can evaluate studies Can offer alternative explanations KNOWING UNDERSTANDING CRITICALLY THINKING
