Buss’s Study: Cultural Differences Females from collectivist cultures placed a higher value on social status and ambition. Alternatively, females from individualistic cultures placed a lower value on these traits. Males from individualistic cultures placed less emphasis on domestic skills. Alternatively, males from collectivist cultures placed more value on these skills. There are two ways to view Buss’s results, as shown in the italics comments

Create Your Dream Mate! What qualities and characteristics would they have? Imagine you found someone just like this. Would you marry them if you weren’t in love with them?

Levine et al.’s (1995) Cross-Cultural Study 11 cultures (college students) Compared the importance of love in getting married “If a person had all the qualities you desired, would you marry them if you weren’t in love with them?” Yes, No, Neutral (were the choices) Indian, Pakistani and Thai participants were more likely to answer “yes” (collectivist cultures) American, British and Australian participants were more likely to answer “no”

Explanation: Harry Triandis Collectivist cultures place higher value on social norms and duty, as opposed to personal pleasure. Marrying for love is about personal pleasure. Social norms could be arranged marriages (e.g. Pakistan and India). Duty could be to their parents’ wishes for whom they marry.
