Registration Priority Based on Remaining Units to Degree AA-006-011

Background Appointment dates for registration are based on the number of units accumulated by the respective students, save for those who have 20 units or less left. Earlier registration dates for students who take a large number of courses for various reasons (double majors, minors, change of major, repeated courses, etc.). Priority based on remaining units to degree

Proposed Model Sac State model for priority registration was developed as part of the university’s graduation initiative, Assigns a weighted registration priority score based on student progress, Categories and max scores are:   Category Maximum Score (points) General Education 40 Major courses 50 Good Academic Standing 5 Non-super senior Overall score is computed proportional to progress in meeting the requirements in each category.

Proposed Model Model implemented in Fall 2014 for senior students Implementation resulted in a shift in assignment of priority Unclear how effective the shift was.

Committee Concerns Cannot determine the extent that disutility of five points dis-incentivizes taking excessive units. Unclear what provisions avoids adverse impact to students in majors such as Architecture and Engineering that require more than 180 units for graduation. Little time elapsed since adoption of the new policies for double major, minor, change of major,   Appropriateness of allowing the students to double major, minor, or change their major under one set of university policies and penalizing them for doing so. Unclear what evidence exists that the desired goals of this referral can be achieved by the Sac. State model.   Rationale and economic justification for implementing the change in the midst of conversion to semester is unclear.

Recommendation Academic Senate recommends against adoption Revisit after conversion
