Chapter 5 Surface Area

5.1 Views of 3-D Objects Key Words A flat or curved surface. Key Words FACE-A flat or curved surface EDGE-A line segment where two faces meet. VERTEX-The point where three or more edges of a figure meet. The plural is vertices.

2D vs. 3D 2 dimensional (2D) objects are flat 3 dimensional (3D) objects have depth

Starter Question For each of the following objects determine: 3 2 1 the number of faces (sides) the 2D shapes that forms the object’s structure 1 2 3

Answers 1. Cube a) 6 faces b) squares 1 2.Cylinder 3 faces 2 circles, 1 rectangle 2 3.Triangular prism a) 5 faces b) 2 triangles, 3 rectangles 3

2D Drawings of 3D Objects Ex 1. Tissue Box 3D objects can be represented by a set of 2D drawings from: Top/Bottom View Front/Back View Left & Right Side View Ex 1. Tissue Box Top front side

Try one: Draw and label top, front and side views of these items a) Soup Can

Try one: Build the object with 6 blocks and then draw the top, front and side views of this object
