1 Definition and role of recreation Definition of ‘RECREATION’: AN OCCUPATION OR ACTIVITY WHICH IS A BREAK FROM WORK IN ORDER TO RELAX Why do I have short breaks of 15 minutes? These little pauses let me have a break, get up, walk, take some air, stretch my legs, talk, have a snack and go to the toilets. I need this break in order to be ready to learn. And the big lunchtime breaks at 13.45? They are for having lunch and are long enough to do either quiet or physical leisure activities depending on the children’s needs: play ball, go to the library, the ICT room, play in the playground, dance, read, CESAME activities etc.

2 Organisation of playground zones Enables the control of intentionally or non-intentionally violent behaviour in the playground by regulating and organising the space. See study done http://www.fapeo.be/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/15-15-2013-Récréations.pdf In our school, play-time is divided into 5 zones : Multicolore d: Marble Zone: I can play marbles, but I am not allowed to run or to play ball. Yellow: Zone where I can run and in the big lunchtime break play ball: I can run and in the big lunchtime break play ball there. Green: Pathway Zone: I can climb, jump, run, scale. White: small games Zone: : zone where you can practise jumping over rope, playing with elastics or hopscotch. I can play there quietly, but also sit on the benches, draw on the ground, have a snack and then line up when I hear the bell. Blue: Through Zone: these zones are used to access the games zones, but I am not allowed to play there or to stop there. The red lines are playground boundaries which must not be crossed.

3 Organisation of ball time To play ball, I need time and space. When arriving in the morning and during the short breaks, there are too many children to play in the ball zone; you can play and run there, but without a ball. However you can play ball every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 11.30 and 13.10. I am in P1/P2 : I share the pitches with the pupils who want to play. I am in P3/P4/P5 : If you want to play on the football pitch, you must respect this timing. The matches must change every 10 minutes MONDAY TUESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY 11.30 till 11.50 P4 P5 12.00 till 12.30 P3 12.30 till 13.10

4 Suggestions for activities in the lunch-time break At mid-day I can: - go to my CESAME activity - go to the library - go to the ICT room - play with small items (string, chalk, hoops, etc) : white zone - Draw, read, make things in the Gutenberg Hall (silent zone) - Dance (white zone) - Climb, scale, balance (pathway zone) - Play marbles (multi-coloured zone) - Play ball freely (yellow zone) - Participate in a football tournament depending on the use of the pitch

5 Make time for mediation and the exchange of information In class: understand and disseminate the rules: understand and discuss any concerns in relation to the playground rules, respect everyone’s wellbeing. During surveillance: Ensure the rules are applied and respected in order to reduce targeted violent situations and reduce the sense of confusion. The rules are the same for everyone, regardless of who is carrying out the surveillance or whether you are in class or in the playground. Throughout the year: Create mediation time in class where the group expresses itself, puts forward solutions, and is a participant in Living Together. Child Councils: listen and respond to the issues brought up by the class representatives during the councils about break-time
