Objectives Explain the purpose of the licensing, certification, and apprenticeship information element. Exam the differences between licenses, certifications, and apprenticeships. Explain the financial resources available to the transitioning service member. List resources/references available to the transitioning service member.

Purpose By federal, state, or local law, companies or positions may require certain credentials. To identify the skills and experiences that may qualify transitioning service members for civilian occupations. May require little or no additional training Help with promotions Show employers that skills are equivalent to civilian peers

Licensure vs Certification Credentialing Licensure vs Certification Apprenticeships Licensure Granted by Federal, state, local for specific occupation Standards to meet are regulated by state or federal laws Typically mandatory Certification Nongovernmental agencies, associations, private sectors Individuals normally meet predetermined qualifications Standards set by professional associations and industry/product related organizations Typically optional credential Apprenticeships paid, relevant workplace experiences/skills/knowledge that are valuable to the employer paths to good jobs and eventually a career in that particular field job certificate or journeyman issued Ex: union plumber or firefighter qualify to receive monthly allowance
