Christianity Practices Revision Name: Teacher: Group: Question 1: Write the correct key word by the definition The sacrament through which people become members of the Church. Involves water as a symbol of the washing away of sin. It is a rite of initiation. A Christian charity that provides emergency and long-term aid to the developing world. The Feast Day commemorating the birth of Jesus. The Holy People of God, also called the Body of Christ, among whom Christ is present and active or a building in which Christians worship. The religious season celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. Starts Easter Day and finishes with the feast of Pentecost. Literally 'thanksgiving'. A service in which the death and resurrection of Jesus are celebrated, using bread and wine. Preaching the gospel (the good news about God) to convert people to the Christian faith. This relates to Christian charities collecting donated food to distribute to the poor in Britain. Another name for the Eucharist Initiation of children into the Church, where promises are taken on their behalf by adults. The infant is freed from sin. An island of the west coast of Scotland founded by Columba in the 4th century. It is used by Christians today as a centre for pilgrimage and religious retreat A church service which follows a set structure or ritual. A town in France, where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette in a series of visions. Now a place of pilgrimage, it is claimed that miraculous healings have taken place Literally ‘sent out’. It refers to the duty of Christians to spread the gospel (the good news about Jesus). A service which does not follow a set text or ritual. Sometimes spontaneous or charismatic in nature. The prayer taught to the disciples by Jesus. Throughout history and still in some parts of the world, Christians face punishment and even death for adherence to their faith. A journey by a Christian to a holy site, Lourdes, Iona. An act of worship and devotion. Giving God praise worship on his or her own. The visible sign of inward grace e.g. the Eucharist A Christian organisation consisting of people who work at night on city streets, caring for those who need help. Offering to God the praise that he is due. This may be done in publicly or in privately. Question 2: Give 2 for each of these… Important places of Christian pilgrimage Two reasons why Holy Week is important Ways Christians worship Sacraments Questions 3 & 4 always have the same command: EXPLAIN TWO CONTRASTING… One way… Another way… … Ways in which Christians celebrate the Eucharist …. Christian views about the importance of pilgrimage … Christians play a role in the local community … In which Christians worship

Questions 3 & 4: These are some of the religious teachings you will need (but not all). For each teaching you need to clearly explain how it applies to the unit and what it possibly tells us about that religion’s view. Question 5: Which are arguments for and which are against this statement? “Do this in memory of me“ “Everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” “Blessed are those who are persecuted … for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “ “go and make disciples of all nations” “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father” “Ask, and it will be given to you” It is a sign of commitment of the parents to the child People should wait till they are old enough to make a decision for themselves Infant baptism allows the child to be brought into the Christian family It is seen as a social occasion and more emphasis on the party afterwards, so the ceremony itself has little religious meaning The baby can’t make the promises, the godparents promise for them Some people reject idea of original sin as outdated and an infant has not committed actual sins Believers baptism involves full immersion in a pool, symbolising the removal of sin. Usually the minister will ask if the candidates are willing to change their life. It is meaningless as the infant is not aware of what is happening There is no longer belief in limbo so infants who die unbaptised are not spiritually disadvantaged “All who are baptised, must first have the gospel preached to them.” Mark 16:15 But what good would be done by preaching to a baby? “Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” Mark 16:6) "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19)", in which Jesus does not set any age limit Question 5: “Christians should be baptised when they are infants” Evaluate this statement - 12 marks What is infant baptism? What is believers baptism? All babies are born with Original Sin The Roman Catholic Church states that "parents are obliged to see that their infants are baptised within the first few weeks" and, "if the infant is in danger of death, it is to be baptised without any delay." Baptism in Scripture always has the prerequisite of repentance and faith, which are impossible for an infant. O – I agree/disagree with this statement because… _______________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Circumcision is the sign of the covenant God made with Abraham and should be received by all the members of his covenant. Since baptism is the New Testament form of circumcision, the children of Christians should receive the sign of the covenant by being baptised. Infants can not outwardly express faith “Repent and be baptised" Acts 2:38, they see repentance as a prerequisite, and this requires a mature understanding of sin and a decision to turn away from sin. The examiner is looking for justification. Have you given good reasons?
