Section 6.3 Elimination/linear combination Solve systems of linear equations using elimination. SWBAT:
Definitions Linear Combination (elimination method): Eliminate one of the variables by adding or subtracting the equations.
Solve By Linear Combination/Elimination STEP 1: Standard form Ax + By = C STEP 2: Multiply so x or y will cancel out. (you want one of the variables to be opposites.) STEP 3: Add and solve STEP 4: find other variable. STEP 5: Check Note: We are not doing step 2 today
Ex. 1: Solve the System – Elimination 4x + 6y = 32 3x – 6y = 3
Ex. 2: Solve the System – Elimination -4x + 3y = -3 4x – 5y = 5
Ex. 3: Solve the System – Elimination 4y + 3x = 19 3x – 4y = 5
Ex. 4: Solve the System – Elimination Pg 349 # 2 The sum of two numbers is -10. Negative three times the first number minus the second number equals 2. Find the numbers. x + y = -10 -3x – y = 2
Ex. 5: Solve the System – Elimination Pg 351 # 5 The sum of two numbers is 24. Five times the first number minus the second number is 12. What are the two numbers? x + y = 24 5x – y = 12
