Genres: Fairytale Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young girl named Cinderella who had two stepsisters. Her father loved her very much, but her stepmother loved only her own daughters. All day the stepmother made Cinderella work, while her stepsisters did nothing. One day, the king announced there would be a ball. Every young woman should come to the palace. After the ball, the prince would select his bride. The stepsisters were very excited and began to think about what beautiful dresses they would wear. They laughed at Cinderella who had nothing to wear but rags. They thought she would definitely not be going to the ball, but they did not know that Cinderella had a fairy godmother watching out for her.

Genres: Folktale Once there was a boy who tended sheep on the hill beyond the town. Day after day he sat on the ground and watched the sheep eating grass. It was a boring job. So, one day, he thought of a way to make some excitement. “Wolf! Wolf!” he yelled over and over. The sheep paid no attention, but soon the people from the town came running to help. When the people found no wolf near, they yelled at the shepherd boy. “You should not yell ‘Wolf!’ when there is no wolf. Never do that again!” Later that day, a real wolf came sneaking around the sheep. Again the boy cried, “Wolf! Wolf!” over and over again. This time no one came to help. The people thought the boy was trying to fool them again.

Genres: Tall tale When Paul Bunyan was born, he looked just like any other baby only a little bigger. His mother fed him well, and he started to grow, and grow, and grow. Pretty soon Paul’s mother couldn’t carry him. He had to ride on a big cart with two oxen to pull it. Everyone marveled at Mrs. Bunyan’s giant baby, but Paul didn’t stop growing. Every year he grew bigger and bigger. He grew to be taller than the tallest trees and then he became a lumberjack. Paul would shoulder his giant ax and walk a hundred miles in just a couple of steps. Then he would swing that ax and cut down a whole forest of trees with one blow.

What genre is this story? Genres: ? What genre is this story? Once upon a time there was a little boy who was very poor. More than anything he wished he could have a bicycle like the other boys he knew. One day he was sitting on his front step watching other children ride by on their bicycles. A little tear slipped out of his eye as he wished again for a bike of his own. Suddenly, a little man appeared on the sidewalk. He was dressed all in green and had tiny wings on his back. “Why are you crying?” asked the little man. The boy was surprised to see such a tiny man, but he managed to whisper, “I want a bike like the other kids, but my mom can’t buy me one.” (continued)

Genres: ? The little man smiled and winked his eye. Immediately a shiny red bicycle appeared on the sidewalk. “You have been a good boy,” said the man. “This is your reward!” Then he disappeared and the boy never saw him again.

What genre is this story? Genres: ? What genre is this story? One warm day in the summer, a grasshopper was playing and singing in the grass. He saw an ant trudge by carrying a huge seed. The grasshopper said to the ant, “Put down that big load, and come play with me.” But the ant said, “I have to collect food for winter. I can’t stop to play with you.” He went on his way with the big seed. The grasshopper thought about it for a bit, but he was having fun, and there was plenty of food to eat. The grasshopper continued to sing and play in the summer sun. (continued)

Genres: ? One day the wind blew cold, and the grasshopper shivered. Winter was coming. Now there was no food to eat, and the warm sun was behind gray clouds. Then the hungry grasshopper did not feel like playing.

What genre is this story? Genres: ? What genre is this story? Once there was a cowboy named Pecos Bill. Bill was famous because he could ride any horse and never be thrown off. He was the star of every rodeo. Bill liked to show off his riding skill, so one day he said he was going to ride a tornado! Bill went to Kansas because that’s where the nastiest tornados go. Pretty soon the sky got dark, and then it turned green. Suddenly, a big roaring sound shook the ground. Out on the prairie, the biggest tornado anyone had ever seen was heading straight toward Bill. Well, Bill got out his lasso, and he lassoed that tornado. He hauled himself up on it and took off across the countryside. (continued)

Genres: ? “Yahoo!” yelled Bill as the tornado bucked and whirled trying to throw him off, but Bill held on. Bill rode for miles, crossing the plains and heading west. On the way, the tornado tore up the ground and made the Grand Canyon. It turned rivers around the other way and took out whole forests. On and on they went, all the way to the California. At last the tornado wore out. It dropped Bill so hard on the ground that when he hit, he made a big hole called Death Valley. Bill went on to ride a lot more bucking broncos in rodeos, but he never tried to ride another tornado.
