Praying as Jesus Taught The School of Prayer Praying as Jesus Taught The Lord’s Prayer Pt. 2

Let’s review part 1

Our Father which art in heaven means: God wants us to have a revelation of relationship. Jesus has given us the same rights and privileges with the Father that He has.

Hallowed be thy name means: We are to command that God’s name should be made holy where His name has been profaned.

Thy Kingdom Come means: We need to pray that God rule and reign over things that have not submitted to His rule.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven means: Jesus told us to pray as God did in creation, commanding His will to be!

Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness. Martin Luther

Give us this day our daily bread The word daily should be translated as tomorrow’s

Bread is not just bread There is bread in the kingdom of God. Luk 14:15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

Bread as miracles Mat 15:26 Jesus tells a Canaanite woman that he must not give the children’s bread to the dogs.   Bread here means casting out demons and healing Joh 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work.”

Jesus’ bread is life Joh 6:33-35 33“For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

We are praying for the bread of the life of the world to come Heb 6:4-5 4For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,

Forgive us out debts as we forgive our debtors The Aramaic word for debt also means sin

Jesus loves to speak of sin in as a debt Parable of the unforgiving servant (Mat 18:23-35) Parable of the two debtors (Luk 7:41-50)

Debts come in all shapes and sizes Sins Monetary debts What people “owe” you.

Frequently mentioned as a background for this petition is the Pentateuchal law of canceling debts Deu 15:1-2 1At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release. 2And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor. He shall not exact it of his neighbor, his brother, because the LORD’s release has been proclaimed.

Further background of this petition is the law for the year of Jubilee. This encompasses the law of canceling debts, goes far beyond that and speaks of greater restoration. Lev 25:10 And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan.

Slaves were to be seen as servants who would be released from slavery at the jubilee. Lev 25:39-40 39If your brother becomes poor beside you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave: 40he shall be with you as a hired worker and as a sojourner. He shall serve with you until the year of the jubilee.

Even in the Old Testament, this was given an eschatological interpretation Isa 61:1-2 1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

Jesus proclaimed the year of Jubilee had come. Luk 4:18-21 Jesus’ sermon in Nazareth Mat 9:2; The Paralytic healed Luk 7:47 The sinful woman who washed his feet

Lead us not into temptation, but delver us from evil God can lead us to temptation… Mat 4:1 Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil

But, He won’t lead us into temptation Jam 1:13-15 13Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

What it means: Lead us away from temptation Mat 26:41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Evil can be taken three ways

The Evil One Joh 17:15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

Evil in general Psa 121:7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. Gal 1:4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

The evil within us Mat 7:11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
