Chapter 9: Photosynthesis!
6 H2O + 6 CO2 (and light)→ C6H12O6 + 6 O2 9.2 Photosynthesis Overall Summary: 6 H2O + 6 CO2 (and light)→ C6H12O6 + 6 O2 What’s missing from this picture?
How does Photosynthesis Happen? There are two main parts to photosynthesis Light-Dependent Reactions. Light-Independent Reactions (the Calvin Cycle).

Light-dependent reactions (summary) a. Convert light energy into chemical energy b. Chloroplasts have pigments (especially chlorophyll) that trap sun’s light. -Chlorophyll absorbs specific wavelengths (red and blue) - Chlorophyll reflects green c. This occurs in thylakoid membranes d. Final Products: ATP, NADPH. Also, Oxygen is byproduct.
The Chloroplast
Light dependent reactions (details) Light strikes chlorophyll and excites electrons, which leave chlorophyll. photolysis-- water is split, making… * electrons (to replace the ones chlorophyll lost) *oxygen gas * hydrogen ions. See next slide…
c. Electrons move to ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN i. As electrons move along the chain they release energy that is used to pump hydrogen ions across the membrane. ii. This creates a hydrogen ion concentration gradient. iii. Hydrogen ions rush down their concentration gradient through ATP Synthase, making ATP. iv. At end of chain, electrons are passed to another chlorophyll.
d. light strikes chlorophyll and excites electrons. e. Second electron transport chain donates electrons to make NADPH (used in Light independent reactions later). Light-dependent Reactions Exit Questions What is the overall purpose of Photosynthesis? (2 points) What are the products of the Light-Dependent Reactions? (3 points) Explain the importance of concentration gradients and facilitated diffusion to the light-dependent reactions. (3 points)
An interesting connection to the light dependent reactions…. Fuel cell car (relates to splitting of water in the leaf) and other stuff Nova ScienceNOW http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/archive/
Light- independent reactions (summary) Also called the Calvin Cycle Happens in stroma of chloroplast Use ATP and NADPH to produce glucose!!!
D. Light independent reactions (details) i. Rubisco (an enzyme) attaches CO2 to RuBP ii. ATP provides energy iii. NADPH provides electrons iv. Glucose is made v. RuBP is regenerated vi. The cycle continues… http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0070960526/student_view0/chapter5/animation_quiz_1.html http://www.science.smith.edu/departments/Biology/Bio231/calvin.html http://faculty.nl.edu/jste/calvin_cycle.htm
