Some groups will learn about text features (captions, labels, diagrams, etc.). Some will learn about scripts and readers theater (similar to a play but uses only voices, no acting). Some will work on sharing and supporting their opinions with the text. They will learn to be respectful of the opinions of others while disagreeing with them. How You Can Help At Home *Ask your child to share his/her opinion about different things that happen in the stories he/she reads at home. Have him/her support his/her opinion. *Read with your child. *Practice Lexia Core 5 and have your child read aloud to you. How You Can Help At Home *Practice building subtraction fact fluency. *Do subtraction with two double-digit numbers. *Help students with subtracting double digit numbers with no regrouping as well as regrouping. *Work on subtraction and addition facts. *You can make double digit subtraction fun by using pretzel sticks to represent the tens and chocolate chips for the ones. Your child can build the number. For example in the number sentence 29-18, your child should use two pretzel sticks and nine chocolate chips to show the number twenty-nine. After he/she has built it, have him/her subtract the number 18, starting with the ones and moving to the tens. How You Can Help: *As a family, build a fort to represent Jericho. This could be made from couch cushions. Retell (or let your child tell you) the story of the battle of Jericho. As you tell it, be sure to have the family march around the city. At the end, pretend to blow trumpets and shout. Knock down the city. *Talk with your child about how the Israelites saw God help them in a big way. Talk about times when God has helped you or your child. at About our Learning : We are doing hands-on exploration and experiments about the different states of matter. We will be enjoying a special treat that has all three states of matter in it (solid, liquid, and gas). How You Can Help: *At supper, discuss what state of matter each of items are that are on the table. We will work with transition words in our informational writing such as first, after, and finally. We will also focus on strong topic and closing sentences. How You Can Help: *Read informational books with your child. Help him/her find the topic and discuss the details.

Valentine’s Day Family Project Valentine’s Mailbox Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. This year, students will be working at home to create a mailbox for our Valentine’s Day card exchange. You can find amazing ideas on Pinterest or Google by typing in “Valentine’s Day box.” Your box can be a cartoon character, animal, or anything else that you choose. Here are the steps you should follow in creating your box: Get a box (a shoebox, Kleenex box, or cereal box works well). Search for an idea on the computer. Be creative! Gather art supplies that you will need: paper, paint, string, googly eyes, etc. Cut a hole in your box so that your friends can slide in a Valentine’s Day card. Decorate your box neatly. Bring your box on Valentine’s Day. Create or purchase Valentine’s Day cards for all of your classmates. You can even find packs of cards for just $1 at Dollar Tree. If you have trouble getting supplies or cards, please let Mrs. Nowotny know at least a week before time so she can help you out if needed.
