Spread of STDs Activity The following activity will give you a visual representation of how STDs are spread throughout a population

The Spread of STDs I will give each of you an index card Keep the special instructions on your card a secret and follow those instructions When I say “go” you will stand up and shake hands with 3 different people that don’t sit near you Get those 3 people to sign your scratch paper

Critique of Activity People with an Z, O, and X on your card stand up Everyone who shook hands with these people stand up Everyone who shook hands with a standing person, stand up The person with “Z” was infected with HIV The person with “O” was infected with Chlamydia The person marked “X” was infected with Genital Herpes Everyone sit down

Critique Continued… Those with the “Do not follow my directions” on their card please stand. These teens chose to abstain from sexual intercourse, and are therefore protected from these STDs

Critique Continued Those with a “C” marked on their card stand up These people had used a condom and were not at significant risk for infection

Please remember… This is just a demonstration. STDs cannot be spread by hand-shaking.

Discussion Questions How did person X feel? Person Z? Person O? How did you feel towards X, Z, and O when you found out they were infected and now you might be infected? 2) What were the initial feelings of those who were instructed to not participate in the exercise? How did those feelings change during the course of the exercise? How did the group feel towards those people initially? And then later? 3) How did the people who discovered they had used condoms feel? 4) The teens with the X, O, and Z cards didn't know that they were infected when we started this activity. In reality, many people don't know they are infected with a sexually transmitted disease. Is it possible to know ahead of time who is infected and who is not? Explain.
