Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott

In the southern states of the USA, all buses were segregated In the southern states of the USA, all buses were segregated. It was mainly black people who used the buses, as in America cars were cheap to run and most white people could afford a car. But when Black people sat on the bus, they had to sit at the back of the bus. If the white section was full, they had to give up their seat and stand for a white person.

The NAACP Rosa Parks was a member of the NAACP. This group stood for the National Advancement of coloured people, and was set up to try and gain Black people civil rights. In 1955, the group decided that something needed to be done to end segregation on buses and Rosa was chosen to do this. She was chosen because she was a good member of society, who went to church. Rosa is often portrayed as an old lady but she was only 42 in 1955!
