Redesigned Curriculum Core Competencies Big Ideas (Understand) Curricular Competencies (Do) Content (Know)

Core Competencies A teacher’s job is not to assess the Core Competencies, it is to develop them within our students. They are: Strength based Student owned Teacher supported Embedded across the curriculum Communicated throughout the school

Integration of the Core Competencies Notice it Name it Nurture it Notice evidence of Core Competencies in student learning Name specific facets and profiles of the Core Competencies Nurture Core Competencies by moving forward along the continuum with instructional intention

Staff Starting Points for the Core Competencies develop awareness of the Core Competencies Watch ministry video Staff collectively develop question prompts for students to help surface the Core Competencies Collaborate and intentionally plan how you will teach and develop the Core Competencies with your students Notice it Name It Nurture It

Steps for effective student self assessment Students identify and evaluate their strengths, competencies and areas for growth 2. Students provide evidence and learning samples that highlight their strengths 3. Students set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) 4. Students revise their work and track their own progress

Role of the Teacher The implementation of student self-assessment in the classroom does not ignore the role of the teacher. The very important role of the teacher involves: * sharing with students the success criteria for each assessment activity * ensuring that students understand the success criteria (“I can” statements for Core Competencies) * explicitly teaching students how to apply those criteria to their own work * providing students with feedback to help them improve * helping students to set learning targets to achieve that improvement
