HUDSON’S BAY COMPANY -Founded 1670 -British owned, managed from London -Held exclusive trading rights to ‘Rupert’s Land’ -all lands drained by rivers flowing into Hudson Bay -”Stay by the bay” policy of trading -Calculated vales of trade goods by comparing them to value of a beaver pelt -Strict with trade, RARELY bargained -Used York Boats to transport fur between posts on Hudson Bay -Ruperts land = 1/3 of Canada -Owned Rupert’s land until confederation (late 1800s) -Posts on mouth of river near HB, FNs came to posts to trade
North West Company -Founded in the mid 1700s -French Canadian Trader, managed from Montreal (Lower Canada) -Explored further inland in the North West area -Established trading posts inland along rivers -Advantage for First Nations, they did not have to travel as far to get to trading posts! -Used canoes to transport goods up and down rivers to trading posts
