Inuit Indians The Arctic Region “the people”

Their Frozen Home… Lived in Alaska Used the Bering Strait to come to Alaska Lived in a very cold climate.

Food They hunted whales, walruses, caribou, seals, and sometimes polar bears They also ate seaweed

How They Got Their Food Hunters Fishermen Ice Fishing - making holes in the ice and waiting for the air-breathing seals and walruses to use them when they needed air. They learned to hunt this way by watching the polar bear

Clothing Parkas – large, thick coats lined with animal fur. Thick, long pants Boots lined with animal fur Made clothes and footwear from animal skins Hoods on women’s parkas made extra large, to protect the baby from the harsh wind when snuggled against the mother's back. Sewn together with needle and thread made from animal bone and skin.

Housing lived in igloos – made from snow and ice. lived in tents made of animal skins and bones when temperatures were above freezing

Transportation qajait – (aka Kayak) Single Passenger boats that were covered in seal skin and floated very well. Used to hunt Sea Animals. If turned over could be righted by person in boat.

Transportation On land, used dog sleds pulled by huskies

Inuit Life Inuit industry depended on animal hides and bones some tools were also made out of worked stones.

Inuit Life Walrus ivory was an important material used it to make knives.

Role of Women The women took care of the children, cleaned huts, sewed and cooked.
