A brief history on Makerere University Makerere University, Kampala (MUK) is Uganda's largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. In 1963, it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees from the University of London. It became an independent national university in 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and Makerere University. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Makerere University as the eighth best university in Africa and the 569th best university worldwide. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2016 ranked it as the fourth best university in Africa

The Positive
Authentic lecturers The institute has well learned lecturers. Many of the lecturers have doctorates which makes them reliable. The highest number of professors compared to other universities in the country.

Infrastructure The Campus has beautiful buildings for example Africa on the left. They are spacious hence can accommodate all students. They have artistic elements which makes them eye catching. The roads are tarmacked and smooth.
Co-curricular activities Students are the University get a chance to engage in several co-curricular activities which include: Cultural galas where students learn and appreciate different cultures, Different sports like football, basket ball, rugby, among others Finalists dinners where students from different years interact. Face of Muk where students’ modelling talents are explored and awarded.

The Negative
Strikes Muk is well known for its notorious strikes. These strikes have the following effects: Destruction of University property. They disrupt lectures and a lot of time is wasted. Many students end up with serious injuries and end up missing out on several lectures. The strikes also give the university a negative image.

The Sex Scandals The university is characterized with so many sex scandals between lectures and students. These have created a very bad reputation for the university. They have also created suspicions on the kinds of degrees students get.
