2nd NUCLEAR REGULATORY INFORMATION CONFERENCE Point of Departure In 2005, supporting of the South African government’s vision for expanding nuclear energy in the South African electricity mix and also looking at other nuclear applications (i.e. isotope and radiopharmaceutical production, food preservation, material research, and others), the DST undertook to establish a coordinated programme. The aim was to assist in advancing skills, ranging from basic and applied research in all applicable science and engineering disciplines, to manufacturing and distinctive aspects of waste management. SANHARP was established following consensus by key stakeholders in the nuclear sector.

2nd NUCLEAR REGULATORY INFORMATION CONFERENCE SANHARP Movement Until March 2009, SANHARP was housed at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA), which is mandated through the Nuclear Energy Act (Act 46 of 1999), to undertake and promote Research and Development (R&D) in radiation science and technology and nuclear energy. From April 2009 SANHARP moved to the National Research Foundation (NRF) since the NRF is mandated to promote and support research through funding and human resource development through the National Research Foundation Act (Act 23 of 1998).

Manus-MatSci Programme 2nd NUCLEAR REGULATORY INFORMATION CONFERENCE Manus-MatSci Programme Since 2012, as part of an exercise of consolidating its support efforts for the energy sector, the DST decided to migrate the Energy Bursaries previously managed by South African National Energy Research Institute (SANEDI) into the SANHARP and also to include the Masters in Accelerator and Nuclear Science (MANUS) and Masters in Material Science (MatSci) that are hosted by University of Western Cape, University of Zululand and iThemba Labs.

2nd NUCLEAR REGULATORY INFORMATION CONFERENCE Challenges Even though there are bottlenecks that may enable South Africa to have a competitive advantage on the technologies developed, these bottlenecks can be addressed. The removal of these bottle-necks would result in a significant enhancement to the skills supply. BLOTTENECKS RESULTS Problems through the skills development pipeline Low number of science and engineering enrolments and graduates in comparison to other degrees Power industry perceived as unattractive by graduates Loss of relevant graduates and skills working in the industry

2nd NUCLEAR REGULATORY INFORMATION CONFERENCE Programme Objectives To position the development of human and intellectual capital for the South African nuclear sector on both local and international platforms. To promote teaching, research and innovation capacity in South African secondary and tertiary institutions in strategic areas of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) for the nuclear sector. To facilitate the development of nuclear skills through skills transfer programmes, collaboration and cooperation as an element of acquiring technology from local and international institutions. To develop a critical research and skills base to support the South African nuclear sector. To promote and ensure comprehensive public awareness and understanding of nuclear-related issues
