Density refers to the amount of matter packed into a given space. Can you look at something and see its density? Its volume? Its mass? Could you have arranged the 12 layers by density just by looking at them?

Think of the dots as matter Think of the dots as matter. Remember that matter is anything that has mass and volume.

Doing the Math You can calculate the density of any sample of matter if you know two things… mass and volume. You can find the density of the sample by dividing its mass by its volume.

Units of Density If you are finding the density of a solid you will use g/cm³. For the density of a liquid you will use g/mL. Does that sound familiar?

Find the Density object mass volume density rock 54 g 17.5 cm³ paperclip 3.5 g 2 cm³ juice 125 g 70 mL

Find the Density object mass volume density rock 54 g 17.5 cm³ paperclip 3.5 g 2 cm³ 1.75 g/cm³ juice 125 g 70 mL 1.79 g/mL

D=M/V What is the density of an object with a mass of 100 grams and a volume of 20 mL? 100 g ÷ 20 mL = 5g/mL

D=M/V What is the density of an object with a mass of 35 grams and a volume of 125 cm³? 35 g ÷ 125 cm³ = 0.28 g/cm³

Try this one The solid object below has a volume of 10.0 cm³. It has a mass of 86 g. What is its density? D = 86 g ÷ 10.0 cm³ D = 8.6 g/cm³

Try this one A block of wood has a mass of 180 grams. It is 10.0 cm long, 6.0 cm wide, and 4.0 cm thick. What is its volume and density? Volume = 240 cm³ Density = 180 g ÷ 240 cm³ D = 0.75g/cm³

Density of H2O The density of water is 1 g/mL. Let’s just say that the green layer is water. What do the liquids below the green water have in common? What about the layers above?
