Wellness U: Well Pig sooie! Reaching New Heights Through an Innovative University Wellness Program Mary A. Wyandt-Hiebert, PhD, MCHES, CWHC, CA Department of Wellness & Health Promotion Pat Walker Health Center, University of Arkansas Part of ACHA General Presentation: Innovative Wellness Programming: Two Approaches Transforming Traditional Education

Introduction Wellness and Health Promotion Pat Walker Health Center, University of Arkansas 4 professional staff, 7 graduate student staff, and numerous undergraduate peer educators and interns Professional staff are also recognized as Public Health adjunct faculty and graduate students as graduate student instructors For 20+ years, we have been teaching 1 hour, 8 week academic courses on a variety of wellness and health topics (e.g. assertiveness, wellness in college life, yoga, mindfulness, masculinity, women’s health, rape culture, healthy relationships, human sexuality, etc.) Blazing the trail for the future… Incorporating new knowledge and skills with known data for greater wellness programming

background The ACHA National College Health Assessment (Fall, 2016) found that within the past 12 months among U of A respondents (n=965): 64.5% felt overwhelming anxiety 63.4% felt very lonely 27.2% experienced difficult social relationships 49.6% had feelings of hopelessness 68.3% felt very sad 20.5% had personal health issues 32% suffered from sleep difficulties that were difficult to handle, and indicated that their academic performance had been negatively impacted by anxiety (24.1%), depression (15.1%), stress (31.3%), and sleep difficulties (20.7%)

background Wellness and health coaching focuses on a holistic, positive approach in which individuals draw upon personal insight into their strengths to find remedies for many of life’s challenges. The diverse range of concerns articulated by Healthy Campus 2020 aligns well with holistic approaches to wellness, which typically integrate broad dimensions of functioning into a growth-oriented and preventative approach to health promotion (Granello & Witmer, 2012; Myers & Sweeney, 2005). The case for holistic health promotion is reinforced by research linking health behaviors with academic success. High levels of stress, lack of sleep, and alcohol use have all been correlated with decreased grade point averages for students (University of Minnesota, 2008).
