The aim was to develop a programme to support adults with severe and enduring mental health problems to make the transition from sheltered NHS environments to education, training, employment or voluntary work. ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Process ____________ moving forward Referrals from 4 CMHTs and Day Services Screening and interviews carried out by OT Successful interviewees attend 8 week course Exit interviews Post course support and case management 6 monthly reviews ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Coping with Change Occupational Therapy Aimed at developing personal skills and self confidence. Course covers: goal setting relationships and conversing with colleagues strategies for stress management stigma exploring volunteering assertiveness getting on with other people problem solving ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Communicating with Confidence Dundee College Aimed at developing key skills of: reading responding listening and comprehension group discussion writing IT exploration of educational opportunities ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Opening up Opportunities Occupational Therapy and College Discuss work opportunities with emphasis on skills development and graded return to work which includes:- identifying transferable skills writing CVs training and volunteer opportunities financial implications of work - Welfare Rights Service site visits and guest speakers e.g. Dundee Volunteer Centre, Braes Riding for Disabled, Dundee Healthy Living Initiative, Learning Around and others ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Outcomes from 2004-2008 ____________ moving forward Demographic data collected pre course Data of exit plan activity which was coded by the occupational therapist who followed up clients At point of discharge occupational therapist collected and coded the final outcomes of demographic and activity data ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Outcomes from 2004 - 2008 ____________ moving forward total of 9 courses 98 (100%) clients referred from Dundee’s Community Mental Health Service 75 (76%) started the course ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Outcomes from 2004 - 2008 ____________ moving forward 75 (100%) started the course 55 (73%) completed the course 47 (62%) engaged with post course follow-up 8 (11%) disengaged with post course follow-up ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Outcomes from 2004 - 2008 ____________ moving forward 55 (100%) completed the course 47 (85%) engaged with post course follow-up and of these 47 (85%):- 23 (42%) achieved 1 vocational outcome 16 (29%) achieved 2 vocational outcomes 5 (9%) achieved 3 vocational outcomes 3 (5%) achieved 4 vocational outcomes ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Employment Outcomes from 2004 - 2008 A total of 10 (18%) of individuals achieved an employment outcome. Their pathway to employment typically comprised of 3 to 4 outcomes to achieve this Employment outcomes were enhanced by 3 (5%) from having additional funding from NHS Endowments to fund permitted work as a route to mainstream employment ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Predictors of Positive Outcomes Age – 46ys to 55yr had 78% engagement with course and post course support Contact with service – 3 to 5years was the optimum length of contact with 73% completing the course and still good results for those with 6 to 10 years at 71% but after 10 years this drops to 47% ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service

Predictors of Positive Outcomes Pre-morbid levels of education – with a significant Percentage, 60%, educated to a minimum of an HND who gained an employment outcome and 34% who had a voluntary or educational outcome Types of previous employment – with 59.5% of individuals who gained an employment, voluntary or educational outcome being previously employed in manual semi-skilled jobs or higher ____________ moving forward Occupational Therapy Service
