Vocabulary Chapter 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, & 2.4

2.1 & 2.2 Air Pressure Barometer Monsoon Global winds The force of air molecules pushing on an area. An instrument that measures air pressure. Wind that changes direction with the seasons. Wind that travels great distances in steady patterns.

2.1 and 2.2 cont. Air that moves horizontally. Curving of global winds as a result of Earth’s rotation. Condition of Earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place. Long distance wind that travels for W to E. Wind Coriolis Effect Weather Jet Stream

2.3 Dew Point Saturation Precipitation Evaporation The temperature at which air with a given amount of water vapor will reach saturation. A condition in which the rates of evaporation and condensation in the air are equal. Any type of liquid or solid water that falls to Earth’s surface. The process by which a liquid changes into a gas. Dew Point Saturation Precipitation Evaporation

2.3 cont. Condensation Humidity Relative Humidity The process by which a gas changes into a liquid. The amount of water vapor in the air. A comparison of the amount of water vapor in air with the maximum amount of water vapor that can be present at that temperature.

2.4 Acid Rain Freezing Rain Hail Sleet Rain that has become much more acidic than normal due to pollution. Raindrops that freeze upon hitting the ground or other surfaces. Balls of ice that fall from cumulonimbus clouds. Pellets of ice that form when raindrops freeze before hitting Earth. Acid Rain Freezing Rain Hail Sleet
