Adult Literacy General educational development (GED) completion

General Educational Development It may also be called: General Education Diploma General Equivalency Diploma Graduate Equivalency Degree

Knowledge About GED What do you know about GED completion coming into the class?

History: Began in November of 1942 Was started by the American Council on Education (ACE) Was designed to help soldiers coming hame from WWII by expanding the possibilities

Adaptation of GED In 1942 it was designed to increase life’s opportunities In 1978 they reevaluated the focus of GED completion Shift in Science and Social Studies material Transitioned away from recalling of facts to application of concepts Made more relevant to real life situations

Adaptation of GED Continued In 1988 it was noted that society was moving away from industrial and toward information based As a result five key changes came about: Addition of a writing sample on the test increase critical thinking and problem solving skills Increase the examination of the many adult roles in society Focus on what brings about societal change increase relevancy to adults

Adaptation of GED Continued x2 In 1988 not only did they shift the focus but the people’s desire shifted as well 65% took it for postsecondary education 30% took it for employment reasons 5% MIA... In 2002 they changed the program so that it would follow the same guidelines as high schools

GED Test The test has five different parts Language Arts Writing Language Arts Reading Social Studies Science Mathematics

GED Facts 15 million people have receive a GED since its beginning in 1942 One in seven Americans with high school credentials have a GED One in twenty college students 70% of people receiving a GED complete at least 10th grade before dropping out

More GED Facts 70% of the recipients are between the ages of 19 and 24 Tests are available in many different forms Tests are also available in prisons, military bases, and the normal testing areas Approximately 25 tests are in circulation at a time for various reason A GED diploma is the most respected and honored high school diploma equivalent

GED Cost This varies depending on the state It can rang anywhere from 0 (such as in Arkansas) to 100 dollars (such as in California) There might be a fee for registering for the exam and for retaking any failed sections of the test

GED Testing Cites 3,200 official GED testing cites in the United States and Canada They are found in various places such as adult education centers, community colleges and public schools Preparation for these tests can be done online or in person in a classroom type setting Tests have to be taken at an official cite (not online)

GED Educators Qualities of an Adult educator Patient Helpful Personable Ready and willing to meet you on your level and work with you as long as necessary to get the learner to the level they need or want to be at

GED Programs There are three main classes or programs that GED centers focus on Refresher classes GED classes English language classes
