Faith, Hope, and Healing
Mark 5:21-24 21 When Jesus went back to the other side of the lake, a large crowd once more gathered around him. 22 While he was by the lakeside, one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came to him. When he saw him, he threw himself down at his feet 23 and implored him, “My little daughter is dying. I beg you to come and lay your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd accompanied him, pressing in on him.
Mark 5:25-28 25 There was a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 even though she had been treated by many doctors and had spent all she had. Instead of getting better, however, she had grown worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came up from behind in the crowd and touched his clothes, 28 for she said [to herself], “If I can just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
Mark 5:29-31 29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed from her affliction. 30 At the same time Jesus, aware that power had gone out of him, immediately turned round in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 His disciples said, “You see the crowd pressing in on you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’!”
Mark 5:32-34 32 But he was looking around to see who had done it Mark 5:32-34 32 But he was looking around to see who had done it. 33 The woman, trembling with fear and knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and told him the whole truth. 34 “My daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace, and be free from your affliction.”
Mark 5:35-36 35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the synagogue leader’s house, saying, “Your daughter has died—why bother the teacher further?” 36 But Jesus, overhearing what they were saying, told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Mark 5:37-38 37 He did not let anyone to go with him except Peter and James, and James’ brother John. 38 When they arrived at the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus found a great commotion, loud crying, and wailing.
Mark 5:37-40 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and crying? The child is not dead—only sleeping.” 40 They laughed at him. But having put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
Mark 5:41-43 41 Then, taking her by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum!,” which means “My child, get up!”. 42 Immediately the little girl got up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). When this happened, they were all completely amazed. 43 He gave them strict orders not to let anyone know, and told them to give her something to eat.
One story (the woman with the flow of blood) is sandwiched inside another (Jairus and his daughter).
