VITAL SIGNS Indicators of community needs in Collier County Updated annually through Hodges University - School of Business

Demographics - Population Age and Ethnicity Seniors 65+ make up 30.9% of the population, an increase from 29% in 2016, and higher than FL at 18.9 and U.S. at 15.2. Highest percent of seniors is age 65-74. Hispanic population is fastest growing population at 27% compared to FL at 24.9% and U.S. at 17.8% Largest growth was individuals age 65-75.

Job Market – Annual Pay Only 53.1% of the population is in the workforce, compared to FL at 58.4% and U.S. at 63.1%. Collier has highest percent of both parents in the workforce at 71.9% compared to 67.1% in FL and 65.1% Unemployment rate is erratic in Collier compared to FL or US. Unemployment rate is above the average (5.5) in summer months and lowest in April (3.6). 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

Conservation Land by Lead Managing Agency in Acres Collier County has 68% of land under conservation compared to FL at 28%

Healthcare – Insurance Coverage Total number of ER visits in which patient was uninsured or underinsured was 14,523 in 2016. In Collier, uninsured males between ages 25 and 34 is higher than FL or U.S. at 44.9% and 29.7% for females in same category. Compared to males in FL is 27.3% and 18.9% in U.S. Females in FL is 19.7% and 12.9% in U.S.

Education – Access to Early Education The benefits of early education have been well documented. Collier County needs more high-quality early childhood education centers

Access to Healthcare The cost of healthcare services is more expensive in Collier County than in FL or the U.S. For example, dental services is $382 per capita vs. $323 in FL and $302 in the U.S. The cost of Nursing Home Care is $31.73 per capita in Collier County vs. $24.71 in FL and $19.66 in U.S. Ratios: CC FL US Primary Providers 1459:1 1379:1 1303:1 Mental Health Providers 1142:1 747:1 1105:1

Education – Public School Demographics White Hispanic Black

Education – Language & Literacy 22% of CCPS K-5 students are enrolled in LEP classes (Limited English Proficient) compared to 8.5% in U.S. 46% of students in 3rd grade attending CCPS are reading below Grade Level. Literacy Rate for Collier County residents is 16.5% compared to 12% in FL and 8.6% in U.S.

Education – Students at Risk Preparation for College Guidance Counselor to Student Ratio in Collier County is 1:327, while the ratio recommended by the American School Counselor Association is 1:250. ACT Composite Scores – the “Achievement Gap” White students scored 25% higher on their ACT scores than black students and 18% than Hispanic students Homeless Students There are 808 children and teens in Collier County Public Schools who are homeless. Most homelessness is caused by loss of employment.

Education - High School Graduation Rate 2015 -2016 graduation rate has improved in Collier County and FL. In Collier, the graduation rate is 86.7% compared to 80.7% in FL.

Affordable Housing - Snapshot Median home sales price in August 2017 in Collier County was $290,000 compared to $190,000 in FL and $220,000 in the U.S. For each Habitat for Humanity home built, 15 families apply. Rental assistance is the number one type of need of Collier 211 callers. Affordable Housing – Cost Burden The number of households spending more than 50% of their income on housing is increasing. This category increased by 7.5% between 2010 to 2015 and is expected to increase by 10% between 2015 and 2020. 35% of seniors pay more than 30% of their income for housing. Of those, 18% spend more than 50%.

Poverty – Food Insecurity 12.5% or 42,000 people in Collier County suffer from not enough food. Percentage of households receiving food stamps/SNAP with children under 18 in Collier County is 63.8% compared to 47.5% in FL and 50% in U.S. Harry Chapin Food Bank delivers 3.2m pounds of food through 24 partner agencies in Collier County. 40% goes to children, 10% to seniors and 50% to families and individuals.

Free and reduced lunch 27,640 students are on free and reduced lunch at Collier County Public Schools. Collier County has 66% on FRL compared to FL at 56%

Women and Girls - Immigration Collier County is in the top third of counties with the highest share of immigrant women and girls.

Women and Girls – Teen Births Teen birth rates have declined to 30 per 1,000 compared to Florida average at 31 per 1,000.

Women and Girls – Multiple Births to Teen Mothers Single mothers without a HS degree are the most likely to be in poverty in the future

Women and Girls – Human Trafficking Florida ranks 3rd in the nation for the number of human trafficking cases There has been 329 Human Trafficking cases reported in 2017, a 24% increase from 2016.

Senior Women – Snapshot Average monthly social security benefit for women: $1,235 in Collier County $1,161 in Florida $1,155 in the United States Retirement income is limited to social security for many and cane be significantly reduced by when a husband dies.

Senior Women -Homelessness Senior women are emerging as a small but critical subset of homelessness. During a ten month period in 2016, 21 senior women contacted Jewish Family & Community Services of Southwest Florida because they were homeless or about to be evicted. The waiting list for affordable senior housing is often three to five years.

Senior Women – as Caregivers In Collier County there are about 12,772 people living with Alzheimer’s disease and 27,843 caregivers of which, 63% (17,540) are women.
