Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity The Granville School Board and Administration believe that extracurricular activities are an integral part of the education of our students. Our coaches/directors are professionals who have spent countless hours learning the skills, strategies, and requirements of their position. Our amateur participants have also spent many hours in preparation for each contest/event. From tryouts and squad selection to end-of-activity; the highest level of respect, courtesy, and sportsmanship is expected from our coaches, participants, parents, and fans. No verbal, emotional, or physical abuse of a coach/director, participant, or official will be tolerated. NFHS Free Course – The Role of the Parent in Sports

Coach Expectations Parent Expectations Be Good Role Models. Communicate weekly with parents - Email of upcoming weeks events, practices, games, etc. Communicate with athlete concerning their role on the team and their development. Call parent if athlete has not communicated with coach about being absent. Provide a safe playing environment. Provide a copy of team rules and expectations. Report scores to media and to athletic office. Parent Expectations Communicate with coach before practice regarding missing practices – This should be done by the athlete as well. Support Coach and their decisions. Encourage your son/daughter to talk with the coach if they have questions. Celebrate successes, team and personal, as well as handling the defeats. Remember it is your child’s dreams, not yours. Support and encourage your son/daughter without being critical. Provide feedback at the end of the season.

Parental Assistance Concession Stands – Organized by MSP (Middle School Parents) and Coaches – If every parent helps once, then it doesn’t end up being a small group of parents doing it all. Clock / Book Volunteers – Organized by Coaches Team Meals / Snacks – Organized by Coaches or Parents There are many opportunities to volunteer your time and skills to each program, and the coach is the best person to find out how. FINISH!!!!

Attendance and Athletics Granville MS

Attendance and Athletics A student must be present a full school day if they are to participate in a contest on that school day.

Attendance and Athletics However, students are allowed two tardies (arrive to school prior to 8:20 am) per semester. After the two tardies, they must be present the full day if they are to participate in a contest on that day.

Attendance and Athletics Special exceptions such as medical or dental appointments can be approved by Mrs. Ormond or Mr. Grime 24 hours prior to the appointment.

Attendance and Athletics A student must be in attendance for four full periods before he/she is permitted to participate in practice for that day.

Requirements for Participation OHSAA Pre-Participation Physical Form Academic Eligibility - All 7th graders are eligible for fall sports. Attendance Policy Please turn in all required forms to the Athletic office or the Middle School office.

Athletic Physicals – Mandatory for all athletes Paperwork that needs to be filled out ahead of time can be found at the Granville Athletic Site. Physicals are good for 1 year. Physical MUST be on file in the athletic office before a student participates in their sport. Must have this completed and turned into the athletic office.

Academic Eligibility Eligibility GEVSD Standard - A student must earn a 2.0 grade point average for a nine-week period to be eligible for interscholastic competition. OHSSA Standard – All entering 7th graders are eligible for fall sports. After that, a student must receive a passing grade (D- or higher) in 5 courses. Academic Waiver – 1 Waiver is allowed in the MS.

GRANVILLE EXEMPTED VILLAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT EXTRACURRICULAR SUBSTANCE ABUSE/TOBACCO POLICY Consequences for Violations 1. First Offense during the student’s school career A. Loss of any leadership position activities for the remainder of the year and may not receive MVP or other post-activity school honors. B. Suspension from 30% of the scheduled regular season athletic contests. Any partial game suspensions shall round to the next whole game (Ex: 2.1 = 3). C. The percentage of suspension not completed would carry over to the next season/activity. D. During the violation period, the athlete shall be permitted to practice with the team, but shall be denied to travel, dress for games and the privilege to sit with the team on the bench during games. 2. Second Offense during the student’s school career A., C., and D. same as First Offense. B. Suspension from 50% of the scheduled regular season athletic contests. Any partial game suspensions shall round to the next whole game (Ex: 2.1 = 3).

GRANVILLE EXEMPTED VILLAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT EXTRACURRICULAR SUBSTANCE ABUSE/TOBACCO POLICY Consequences for Violations 3. Third Offense during the student’s school career A. The student is removed from all extracurricular activities for one year from the date of the infraction meeting. B. After one year of the suspension has been served, the student may apply to the Athletic director for reinstatement. The final determination of reinstatement is at the sole discretion of the athletic director and Principal. The student may apply each year for reinstatement.

Schedule Conflicts When a student’s dual participation in extracurricular activities results in a conflict, the following policy will apply. A “performance,” athletic contest,, or musical concert will have priority over normal practices, meetings, and rehearsals. In the event a practice, meeting, or rehearsal is scheduled at the same time as an athletic contest in which the student participates, the athletic contest has priority and the student is to be excused without penalty from the activity. Conversely, in the event a music or other activity performance conflicts with an athletic practice, the performance take priority and the athlete is excused from the athletic practice without penalty.

Club vs. School Sport It is vital that coaches, parents, and athletes understand the commitment they make when joining a team and how difficult it is to honor those commitments when participating in more than one sport during a season. We expect the school sport to take precedent over a club sport in the event of a conflict. Please communicate with the coach if your child is going to be involved in a club sport during their season so that you can work out ahead of time potential conflicts.
