Being an effective leader Recreation and healthy Active Leadership PLF4M A2 Lesson – Leadership Types

Think of the leaders in your life What do all the leaders in your life have in common? What attributes can you think of? Think about what leaders created change in the past to get us where we are today!

Woman Suffrage Case Study Women’s suffrage (or franchise) is the right of women to vote in political elections; campaigns for this right generally included demand for the right to run for public office. The women’s suffrage movement was a decades-long struggle intended to address fundamental issues of equity and justice and to improve the lives of Canadians.

Suffragists — people who advocated for the extension of suffrage — were typically White, middle-class women, many of whom believed that suffrage would increase the influence of their class and result in a better country. Figure 2 Suffrage Meeting

Men and Women as separate entities The insertion of the word male in 1843 in New Brunswick, and in 1849 into Québec election law, reflected an emerging ideology that placed women and men in separate spheres. This reflected the increased idealization of women as guarantors of cultural survival, who had no place in political life. Under this ideology, women were expected to remain at home, producing children and guaranteeing culture. As French Canadians increasingly became a minority culture among English-speaking Protestants in British North America, women’s suffrage was seen as a particular threat to their national survival.

Begin to stand for your rights! By the last decades of the 19th century, Canadian women increasingly protested against discrimination in education and paid employment as well as violence against women and children. One remedy was the suffrage campaign, which was led by many first-generation university graduates and female professionals in medicine, teaching and journalism To be continued….
