Presentation transcript:

Activity How would you sort the items found on the front desk? What guidelines would you use to group them? How many groups would you have?

Life is Very Diverse There are many different types of organisms on Earth. 100,000 species of fungi 290,000 plant species 52,000 vertebrate species 1,000,000 insect species Could be anywhere from 10-100 million species total!!

Taxonomy In order to better understand the many species, we try to group them. Taxonomy-the branch of biology that names and classifies species.

Classifying Organisms King Philip Comes Over For Great Soup

How to Write Scientific Names The text should be in italics, or underlined if writing rather than typing. The first word, the genus, should be Capitalized The second word, the species, should be lower case. Example: Homo sapiens

How Do We Decide on Groups? Before the advancement in genetics, many scientists had to group them based on their appearance. Now that genetics is more advanced we can determine groups based on how related the organisms are. More closely related organisms should be grouped together. The closer the relation, the more similar their genes.

As Science Advances, Classifications Change Taxonomy is always changing as we learn more in the field of science. Paser domesticus Order: Passeriformes Family: Passeridae

Domains Foldable Fold your paper into 3 sections Label the top section Bacteria Label the middle section Archaea Label the bottom section Eukarya

Crash Course: Taxonomy Taxonomy Crash Course (Resources Page) Put characteristics of each Domain in the correct section as they are discussed.
