How far have the lives of women changed over the last century, in a country that you are from?

Your final task of the year is an independent project. You will select a country that you have strong family links to, e.g if you & your parents are all from HK, you will study HK; if you have a parent from Thailand, a parent from Australia, grandparents from China, and you are from HK, you have a big choice to make...think sensibly about which country you will be able to study. You will produce a poster, on poster paper (to be distributed nearer the hand-in). You will conduct an interview with a female family member, to find out about their life experiences.

How has the role of women changed in a society of your choosing in the 20th century? Interview a female member of your family – grandmother, mother, auntie. Consider: Education (e.g. What education did she have? What subjects? Different from boys/men? Job opportunities Marriage Who brought up her children? Expectations – her own? Her parents’? Is life easier / better now? Why? What (if anything) would she have changed about her life?

The following are all important in helping you to succeed on this project: Organisation - don’t fall behind Seek help if you are struggling Include a timeline on your poster, to show the clear chronology (timescale) of change Organise your work into sections, e.g. How did education / employment / legal rights / clothing / expectations of women change over time? Explain how and why change took place Examine how far one event can change the lives of women, e.g. if the law bans discrimination, does discrimination end overnight?

Week 1: Decide on your country, conduct research - find helpful websites. Homework: further, detailed research Week 2: Organise your ideas, and conduct further research as necessary Homework: Interview a female family member Week 3: Put your poster together - make sure you explain how & why change happened over time in your country. Explain what caused the change, and how far it changed life for women. Week 4: Hand in & present
