Julia Butterfly Hill Katherine Cox

General Information Born February 18, 1974 USA Homeschooled, began college at age 16, and opened her own restaurant at age 18 Environmental Activist, Motivational Speaker, Author, and cofounder of the Circle of Life Foundation and the Engage Network

Contributions On December 10, 1997, Hill ascended into a thousand year old great redwood tree, named Luna, that was set to be destroyed by the Pacific Lumber Company. She lived in the tree for 738 days, and made it impossible to remove the tree without killing her. Hill gained some attention from the media during her tree sit and was supported by Earth First! and other volunteers/organizations. Her act of civil disobedience led to a compromise between the company and herself. Through this, Luna was preserved and all other trees within a 200ft radius were too.

apes Hill’s tree sit falls under the Unit 4 of AP Environmental Science. This includes water and land use. Also, her activism supports Unit 2 when discussing Ecosystems. This includes deforestation and habitat destruction.
