Beacon Detection with VHF Assumptions Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.22-yy/xxxxr0 April 2008 Beacon Detection with VHF Assumptions IEEE P802.22 Wireless RANs Date: 2008-04-09 Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.22. Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair Carl R. Stevenson as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.22 Working Group. Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.22-yy/xxxxr0 April 2008 Abstract In [1], the beacon packet error rates for MSF1 and MSF2 in AWGN and WRAN-B were presented and related to link margin using UHF assumptions. One of the action items from the March 2008 Plenary Session was to present the results using VHF assumptions. This submission presents those VHF results. VHF Link Margin Considerations April 2008 VHF Link Margin Considerations Express required chip SNR in terms of interference link and sensing link parameters [2] Assumptions for UHF case from [1] Beacon power = 250 mW (UHF specific) Beacon Tx antenna gain = 2 dBi (UHF or VHF) Microphone Rx antenna gain = 2 dBi (UHF) Interference upfade = 2.5 dB (UHF or VHF) ΔNF = 0 dB (UHF and VHF) I/Nmax = 0 dB (UHF and VHF) Antenna height difference (UHF specific) 16.8 dB rural 10m – 1.5m, P.1546 2.7 dB Hata large city 3m to 1.5m Stephen Kuffner, Motorola

Specific VHF Assumptions April 2008 Specific VHF Assumptions Beacon Tx power = 50 mW Microphone Rx antenna gain = -6.5 dBi This value was what we were advised to use at the March 2007 Plenary session and appears in [3] Antenna height difference 14.4 dB rural 10m – 1.5m P.1546 2.5 dB Hata large city 3m – 1.5m Stephen Kuffner, Motorola

April 2008 Link Margin Equation Antenna-height related path loss clutter parameter Δ P.1546 rural VHF -0.395 + 14.4 + 8.5 – 2.5 – 0 + 0 = 20.05 dB Modulation & coding has to deliver acceptable PER performance for less than 20 dB Ec/No WRAN-B: < 0.1% for MSF1 and about 0.5% for MSF2 Hata large city VHF -0.395 + 2.5 + 8.5 – 2.5 – 0 + 0 = 8.1 dB Have to deliver PER for Ec/No < 8.1 dB WRAN-B: about 1.9% for MSF1 and 14% for MSF2 Corresponding UHF numbers from [1] were 3% and 18.8% Stephen Kuffner, Motorola

Conclusions TG1 Packet UHF [1] VHF MSF1 3% 1.9% MSF2 18.8% 14% April 2008 Conclusions TG1 Packet UHF [1] VHF MSF1 3% 1.9% MSF2 18.8% 14% Stephen Kuffner, Motorola
