Density
Classwork Write up today’s experiment called Measuring Density in Physic’s copy Main sections Higher level only - (ii) Measuring the density of a liquid like water Pg 116 (iii) Measuring the density of a solid like a stone Pg 112 (i) Measuring the density of a rectangular solid Pg 110
Objectives measure mass and volume of a variety of solids and liquids and hence determine their densities
Density Density is the mass of 1cm3 of a substance. It is measured in g/cm3 Use the formula Density =Mass Volume
Activity Can you explain this? Take a sheet of aluminium foil 30cm by 30 cm. cut it in two. Squeeze one piece tightly into a ball. Make a ‘boat’ out of the other piece. Put both into a basin of water. Can you explain this? Explain what you observe
Archimedes is famous for discovering that a king’s crown, supposedly made of solid gold, was in fact made of lead covered with gold. How do think he proved his case?
Think about it.. How could you prove that a barman was watering down the whiskey without you having to drink any of it?
Density and Floatation The most dense object sinks the furthet and the least dense object floats on the top
