The Moon

1. The moon is ¼ the size of the Earth

2. Giant Impact Theory: It is believed the Earth was hit by an object about the size of Mars and part of the Earth broke into pieces as did the object that hit the Earth. Over the course of millions of years, the debris stuck together to form the moon.

3. We see the moon because of the sun reflecting off it 3. We see the moon because of the sun reflecting off it. We usually can’t see the moon during the day because the sun is brighter. 4. If we were to look at the moon from space, we would see ½ of the moon is always lit, but the amount we see depends on where it is in its revolution and the angle of the moon in reference to the Earth and the sun

5. We only see one side of the moon: it revolves around the Earth at the same rate as it rotates. 6. It takes 27.3 days for the moon to complete one rotation and one revolution.

- waxing: the amount of moon we see is growing (increasing) 7. The phases of the moon are caused by the relative position of the Earth, moon and sun. - waxing: the amount of moon we see is growing (increasing) - waning: the amount of moon we see is shrinking (decreasing) 8. It takes the moon 29.5 days to go through all the phases (new moon to new moon) 8 This is because the Earth is also constantly moving, so the moon has to catch up They named this a moonth! (aka month!)
