Proclamation of 1763 Declared by King George III at the end of the French and Indian War Forbid colonists from expansion to the west of the Appalachian Mts

French and Indian War French and American Indians against the British Both sides incurred a lot of debt British felt the colonists should pay their part since the war was fought for their land taxes

Taxes/Acts King George III needed to pay off debt and felt the colonists needed to pay taxes to help Colonists were upset that laws could be passed effecting them even though they had no representation in parliament

Tax on sugar, molasses and other imported goods Sugar Act-1764 Tax on sugar, molasses and other imported goods James Otis “Taxation without Representation is tyranny”

Quartering Act-1765 British soldiers could stay in any private home they wanted. Families would need to house and feed them.

Stamp Act of 1765 Taxed all legal commercial documents, including diplomas, contracts, newspapers, and even playing cards!

Stamp Act continued Colonists protested the Stamp Act by organizing and forming the Stamp Act Congress in NY city to decide what to do.

Sons of Liberty Organized by Samuel Adams Burned any stamp paper they could find Tarred and feathered British officials

Many colonists boycotted British goods (stopped buying them)

Daughters of Liberty Helped by creating items they no longer bought from the British (ex. Clothing) This hurt the British trade so they repealed the Stamp Act in 1766

Townshend Act-1767 Taxed goods like glass, paper, paint, lead & tea Allowed British officers to search homes and businesses for possible smuggled goods

Boston Massacre-1770 British troops opened fire on rioting colonists. 5 killed Repealed Townshend Act later that year

Tea Act 1773 Colonists had to buy all their tea from Britain/ England Colonists responded with Boston Tea Party Dec. 16, 1773

Boston Tea Party A group of men disguised themselves as American Indians Boarded 3 tea ships in the Boston Harbor Broke open tea chests and threw them overboard

Coercive Acts-1774 also referred to as Intolerable Acts Naval blockade of Boston Harbor until the tea was paid for Also banned commitees of Correspondence

First Continental Congress All colonies sent a representative to the meeting except Georgia Decided to ban all trade with England until Acts repealed Each colony needed to train militia (in case of war)
