CH 12 SEC 1 EARTH IN SPACE
GOAL/PURPOSE STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW THE EARTH MOVES THROUGH SPACE. STUDENTS WILL EXPLAIN THE CAUSES OF THE SEASONS ON EARTH.
HOW THE EARTH MOVES ASTRONOMY- IS THE STUDY OF THE MOON, STARS, AND OTHER OBJECTS IN SPACE. KEY- EARTH MOVES IN SPACE IN 2 DIFFERENT WAYS; ROTATION AND REVOLUTION ROTATION- THE SPINNING OF THE EARTH ON ITS AXIS KEY- EACH ROTATION CAUSES DAY AND NIGHT. TAKES ABOUT 24 HOURS TO ROTATE CALLED A DAY!
SKETCH TILT OF EARTH
EARTH IN SPACE REVOLUTION- THE MOVEMENT OF ONE OBJECT AROUND ANOTHER KEY- IN ADDITION TO MOVING ON ITS AXIS THE EARTH TRAVELS AROUND THE SUN. KEY- ONE COMPLETE REVOLUTION AROUND THE SUN IS CALLED A YEAR KEY- EARTH FOLLOWS A PATH OR ORBIT AS IT REVOLVES AROUND THE SUN
SKETCH A REVOLUTION
THE SEASONS ON EARTH KEY- EARTH HAS SEASONS BECAUSE IT IS TILTED AS IT REVOLVES around THE SUN
PURPOSE THE PURPOSE OF THIS LESSON IS TO LEARN HOW THE EARTH MOVES THROUGH SPACE AND WHY WE HAVE SEASONS
SKETCH
SOLSTICES The solstices- are days when the Sun reaches its farthest northern and southern angles. Winter solstice -occurs on December 21 or 22 and marks the beginning of winter (this is the shortest day of the year). Summer solstice occurs on June 21 and marks the beginning of summer (this is the longest day of the year).
Equinoxes Equinoxes- are days in which day and night are of equal duration. 12 hrs of daylight and 12 hrs of night. The two yearly equinoxes occur when the Sun crosses the equator. The Vernal (spring) equinox -occurs in late March (this is the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of fall in the Southern Hemisphere); the Autumnal (fall) equinox- occurs in late September (this is the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere).
