Bringing students together with Inter-Professional Learning (IPL) Clair Zawada Academic Lead Clair.zawada@bcu.ac.uk

Introduction Birmingham City University – located in UK, Midlands, with approximately 24,000 students. Faculty of Health, Education & Life Sciences offers courses in education, social work, nursing, midwifery, allied health, sports, public health and biomedical engineering. Many students within the Faculty have a placement element within their course.

Inter-Professional Learning (IPL) – What is it? “Occasions when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care” Enables the participant professions to learn from, with and about one another” The Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE)

Inter-Professional Learning (IPL) – The Challenges Some links between professions are more ‘relevant’ than others. Navigating student placement patterns Varying cohort sizes Student engagement with extra-curricular activities Resources

The IPL Conference Faculty of Health, Education & Life Sciences Identified week in academic calendar Open to all staff and students Varied timetable of sessions across the week Most programmes contributed sessions to the timetable Booking system for all sessions Attendance optional but encouraged

HELS ‘Peaky Blinders’ escape room   Interpreting chest x-rays Have a go at laparoscopy Makaton signing Dealing with a hanging body Tackling homophobia in children What happens in court when it goes wrong ECG Interpretation Have a go at Diagnostic Radiography Guiding People with Severe Sight Loss Impairment Awareness Training History and science behind resuscitation Helping your child with Primary maths – the way they do it today! The Body Virtual Reality Emotional Resilience Theatre Environment and Theatre Etiquette Introduction to Counselling A Day in the Life of Daisy’ Assessing Children in Critical Care Have a go at Ultrasound Transgender Awareness First aid / dealing with choking

Logistics Finding ideas for sessions, and knowing who does what Marketing – getting the message out to staff and students Timetabling, and fitting in around student lectures Booking system – tried Eventbrite, then Moodle Attendance registers and certificates Obtaining evaluations

Student Evaluation “…it was open to everyone and we got to experience things that mostly students in other courses would experience.” “I was able to choose the learning that was most applicable for me. I was able to extend my existing knowledge and compliment my studies” “I loved these programmes, they were extremely helpful and were brilliant in gaining a chance to network with other students from different years.” “I liked being able to pick which sessions I attended, and working with students from other courses. It was nice to have a change in timetable from the my usual course lectures and learn new skills.” “…I met radiographers from second year during Advanced life support and teachers during dealing with a choking infant. I also met fellow nursing students in being old which enabled me to ask questions and make new connections. They were stimulating and something different to engage in being more practical and hands on. This is something I'd recommend every year, the activities allow you to build up on your current learning to develop a deeper understanding.”

Student Evaluation On a scale of 1-5 (with 1 being not at all, and 5 being very much so) please rate your experience of the IPL programme 1 2 3 4 5 Enjoyable Useful Informative Relevant Avg 4.7 Avg 4.7 Avg 4.7 Avg 4.5 98% of students would recommend the IPL conference to a fellow student 89% of students interacted with students from other professions

Moving Forward Run twice per academic year Increase student engagement Increase timetable variety Improve marketing and communications Encourage course leaders to embed into curriculum Regular IPL webinars
