Semester Program in Geneva, Switzerland or Vienna, Austria

Study in Geneva, Switzerland In September 2013, the Sié Center launched the Korbel in Geneva program, a study abroad opportunity for master’s degree students at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Currently this program, alongside the DC Program, is administered within the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Each year, up to ten students will be selected to spend six months in Geneva, Switzerland as part of an academic program with the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies. Student participants typically arrive in Geneva in July and stay through December and have the opportunity to intern at a Geneva-based organization and to complete two to three graduate-level courses during their stay.

Study in Vienna, Austria The Korbel in Vienna Program was launched in Summer 2017. The program is administered within the OASA office and is currently run alongside the Geneva program. You will see many similarities. Each year, three to four students will be selected to spend four months in Vienna, Austria as part of an academic program with the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Student participants typically arrive in Vienna in August and stay through December. They will have the opportunity to intern at a Vienna-based organization and to complete graduate-level courses, equivalent to 8-12 credit hours, during their stay.

Courses The Geneva program is administered in collaboration with The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. The Vienna program is administered in collaboration with the Diplomatic Academy Students will enroll in two to three master's-level, elective courses offered by the Master in International Affairs during the fall semester of the program year. Each course is held 2 hours/week over 14 weeks and is equivalent to a four-credit course offered at the Korbel School and will transfer as such. Students may also earn up to four credits through an approved internship placement with a Geneva-based organization. In total, students will be able to earn 12-16 credit hours toward their degree while participating in the Geneva program.

Internships in Geneva A core component of the program is an internship at a Geneva-based international organization, NGO, or multinational firm. It is incumbent upon the student to research and locate opportunities and to apply and secure an internship. The Korbel Office of Career and Professional Development is available to students to provide advice, resources and professional development assistance during a student's internship search. Examples of internships: Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) International Committee of the Red Cross International Labour Organization International Organization for Migration UNICEF United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights World Health Organization World Trade Organization ICoCA Small Arms Survey

Tuition and Other Expenses Tuition will continue to be paid directly to the University of Denver Students participating in the Geneva or Vienna program will continue to receive their DU financial aid package (loans, scholarships, grants, etc.). Each student will be responsible for organizing and paying for his or her travel to and from Geneva/Vienna. Students will be responsible for personal costs that may be incurred as a result of participation in the program, including airfare, housing in Geneva, transportation, meals, entertainment, books and supplies, and other personal expenses. Living expenses in Geneva vary greatly depending on the chosen standard of living.

Eligibility and Application The Geneva and Vienna programs are open to master's degree-seeking students at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. First year and second year students may participate. Students from all degree programs within the Josef Korbel School are welcome to apply. No more than 10 students will participate in the Geneva or Vienna program each academic year. Applications for the 2018 program year will be accepted from November 1, 2017 - January 31, 2018.
