Insuring Iowa’s Agriculture Michael Duffy Ames, IA November 3, 2009 Input Cost Outlook for 2010 Insuring Iowa’s Agriculture Michael Duffy Ames, IA November 3, 2009

Significant Changes Fertilizer costs will be considerably lower Seed costs will be modestly higher but even more so for the newer varieties Fuel costs should be moderately higher Land values dropped but appear to have stabilized; land rents should follow suit but there is still some adjustments taking place Overall projections are for lower costs of production

Conclusions Costs of production for both corn and soybeans have risen substantially in the past few years; 2010 is estimated to be the first year that will reverse that trend Fertilizer costs will lead the way in reducing the costs of production Seed costs will be hard to project for many years as the new varieties and traits are introduced Energy costs are still projected to be slightly higher than last year but not near as high as previous peaks
