Presentation transcript:

¡Vamos a comer! On the following slide are four questions about our next unit of study, la comida. Copy the four questions onto a piece of paper, leaving enough space to answer each question thoroughly. Your homework tonight is to answer these personal questions (in English!) with as much detail as possible. Feel free to share these questions with a family member, as they might help you to answer them!

¡Vamos a comer! We all have plenty of thoughts/stories/comments that we can’t wait to share with one another, but please be sure to: Raise your hand when you want to contribute to the discussion Listen while others are speaking and keep any “ew” comments in your own brain! Stay on task in both whole-class and partner discussions Enjoy these days of conversation (but do know that they might make you hungry! )

¡Vamos a comer! Why is food important to you? What are your favorite foods and why? How does food play a role in your family’s traditions? What are the customs & traditions of food and dining in America? What are foods that we, as Americans, pride ourselves on?

EL DESAYUNO - breakfast For desayuno today I ate…. On weekends for desayuno I eat… Our family’s desayuno traditions/routines are….

¿Sabes. While cereal is the most popular breakfast food in the U. S ¿Sabes? While cereal is the most popular breakfast food in the U.S., it’s not as common in Spanish-speaking countries. Also, breakfast in Spanish-speaking countries is usually eaten around 7:00 or 8:00 a.m.

People often eat a panecillo (a plain or sweet roll) and a piece of fresh fruit, such as a papaya or piña (pineapple). Galletas (not-too-sweet cookies) or magdalenas (small sweet rolls that taste like pound cake) are sometimes served with breakfast, dunking them in café con leche (mostly warm milk with a little strong coffee), or chocolate (hot chocolate).

Café con leche ~ Espresso with milk added Café con leche ~ Espresso with milk added. The most popular form of coffee in Spain.

Un desayuno típico de Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, breakfast traditionally consists of a gallo pinto (into beans and rice) with natilla (sour cream) and a tortilla de maíz (corn tortilla). This dish inspired the American breakfast burrito which consists of scrambled egg, bacon, potato, guacamole and sour cream all wrapped in a tortilla.

Un desayuno típico de América Latina

El desayuno en México A light breakfast eaten first thing in the morning - perhaps just coffee, hot chocolate or atole (a thick hot drink that is made with corn, rice or oats) and pan dulce (sweet bread) or fruit.

If this seems like a skimpy breakfast to you, remember that it’s common for people to have a mid-morning merienda, or snack, at about 10:00 or 11:00 to tide them over until lunch.

For many people, breakfast in Spain looks a bit disappointing if you wake up feeling properly hungry: it's often just a café y croisant (croissant). Lots of people stop mid-morning for a more substantial second breakfast, often a sizable bocadillo (sandwich/sub) of: sobrasada, jamón serrano, queso, butifarra blanca, chorizo, butifarra negra, & salchicha.

Compare breakfast in your house and what you know about breakfast in Spanish-speaking countries. Which style of breakfast do you like better, and why? Which seems healthier to you? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

In many Spanish-speaking countries, the main meal –simply called la comida – is usually eaten around two o’clock. It is typically a heavier meal than lunch in the U.S. It consists of soup, meat, or fish with rice and vegetables, followed by dessert, & coffee.

For many people, it is traditional to have a rest, or siesta, after the comida, and then go back to work (or classes) until late evening.

What advantages can you see in eating the main meal early in the day What advantages can you see in eating the main meal early in the day? How would you like to go home at midday, eat with your family, and take a short nap or watch TV before going back to classes?

Compare/contrast your lunchtime routine to a typical routine in a Spanish-speaking country. If you could choose, which routine would your rather have, and why?

Between seven and nine p. m Between seven and nine p.m., many Spaniards go to a café or bar to have tapas (appetizers). Generally they have their cena (dinner) around ten at night, consisting of a sopa, tortilla or other light meal, pan & postre (dessert).

What is a plato típico of our country What is a plato típico of our country? Many people think food in all Spanish-speaking countries is spicy. Not true! Many people in other countries believe that everyone in the U.S. eats fast food all the time. Is this true, in your opinion? Is la comida norteamericana really just fast food, or is it something else? Explain.
